Business owners aren’t closing because they hate the neighborhood; they’re closing because shoplifting, smash-and-grabs, and chaos make it impossible to operate without losing money hand over fist. Progressive DAs and city leaders in Portland have turned a blind eye to retail theft for years, treating criminals like victims and store owners like the problem. Now east Portland turns into a food desert, and hardworking families pay the price with longer trips, higher costs, and less access to basics. You can’t defund the police, hamstring prosecutors, and expect businesses to stick around.
