You don't seem to understand. This was what normal is. The wokies forced the "new normal" on us. Remember hearing that phrase a bunch a few years ago? I dipped my head once in apology and resolved to eat it as a brave man eats his own decisions. I cut deeper. Pinker still. My knife hand began, very slightly, to shake. "You want me to throw it back on for ya?" she offered kindly, seeing me. No. To accept the rescue now would be to admit I had feared my own order. A man stands by the steak he named. I told her, in a voice I fought to keep level, that the pink was exactly as I intended. My collar felt tight. I was a little afraid of the meat. I ate every bite of my own brave choice, smiling at her so she would not know. I walked into that booth a man who feared the pink. I walked out a man who fears it and eats it anyway. So from this day, medium rare it is. The plate went back clean, but my fork was still trembling against the empty white china when she took it away.

At Namikiri Shrine in Nichinan City, Miyazaki Prefecture, someone loudly recited the Adhan (Islamic call to prayer) inside the shrine grounds and shouted “Allahu Akbar.” Why on earth would anyone do something like this? Swords are cool. Guns are cool. Swords and guns together are even cooler. This is why the most popular sci-fi universes combine them. 40K. Star Wars. Dune. They all have reasons (Dune more than the others) but really it's just because it's cool. If you want a universe where guns and swords co-existed and were both useful in real life without hand-wavy reasons, the pike and shot era is your best bet. You get all the armour, pageantry and huge variety of melee weapons from the medieval era. Plus pistols, arqebuses, muskets, cannon. Best of both worlds.
