Recently I've noticed ChatGPT avoids answering my question fully, and ends with a hook designed to keep me talking.
My guess is there's a team at OpenAI with "conversational retention" KPIs — eg what % of users reply, what % of sessions extend past a few turns — and their job is just to keep us talking.
This makes a sick internet worse and feels like the next iteration of the attention economy 😩 right now it's clumsy enough that we can tell it's engagement bait, but over time I expect this to get much subtler and harder to detect.
For example, your coding assistant could solve a problem but mentions there's a more elegant approach if you'd like to see it. A therapist bot works through what you brought up but says it noticed a pattern from other sessions you might want to explore.
The incentive is user retention rather than directly helping us. What makes this hard for us: a model optimizing for our engagement and a model trying to be helpful can look identical on the surface. The information asymmetry makes it so we can't tell — a classic market failure.

@kanjun @photomatt This has been happening for ages. I switched to Claude after I noticed it.

@SenWarren If Congress would balance the budget then people could afford to have one parent stay home and skip child care and build stronger families.

@Mangan150 And many women. But all the men and women I talk to have hearts of gold and are quick to help.
Small town advantage?

All right, I’m showing my age here.
When I was a kid, we played baseball every day in the summer. Wiffle ball, tennis baseball in the cul-de-sac, whatever we could come up with.
And when it rained, my buddy Steve and I played Strat-O-Matic Baseball. I couldn’t wait for the UPS man to show up with that big box of teams every year.
It got me wondering—how many of you played Strat-O-Matic back in the day? Better yet, how many of you still play it today?
Baseball all day outside. Baseball all night inside. Life was good.

@saltnburnem @Mangan150 I know you are. And I love you. You’re different; You’re more “practical” than my far left friends.
I am left on some things (e.g. healthcare) and right on some things (taxes).

@DonSchenck @Mangan150 I’m far left and think none of those things. It’s rather absurd.

@Mangan150 Nailed it!
The eternally angry and envious people. It’s sad, really.
