The first sign that something had changed was the silence. Not the peaceful silence of two people comfortable in each other’s presence, but the kind that grows heavy in a room. The kind that makes you notice the ticking of the wall clock and the hum of the refrigerator at night. Ada had known Emeka for twelve years. They met when they were both young and hopeful, standing in a long queue at a small bank in Lagos. He had cracked a joke about how the line moved slower than traffic on the Third Mainland Bridge, and she had laughed harder than the joke deserved. That laugh was how everything began. Back then, Emeka had nothing. No steady job, no savings, just a restless determination and a notebook full of business ideas that never seemed to leave the pages. Ada believed in him when believing in him looked foolish. When he lost his first job, she sold her small gold earrings to help them pay rent. When his small import business collapsed, she picked up extra shifts at the hospital where she worked as a nurse. When he said he wanted to try again, she stayed up late with him, helping him write proposals and emails to people who rarely replied. They lived in a small one-room apartment where the ceiling fan shook whenever it spun too fast. Sometimes the electricity would go out for hours, and they would sit on the balcony, sweating in the dark, talking about the future as if it were something guaranteed. “One day,” Emeka used to say, “I’ll make your life easy.” Ada never asked for easy. She only wanted them. Years passed, and slowly things started changing. His new logistics company began to grow. At first it was just one small contract, then another. Soon he was traveling more often, wearing sharper suits, speaking in a tone that sounded more confident than the man she married. Ada was proud of him. Truly proud. But success has a strange way of rearranging people. The late nights became normal. The phone calls he took outside became frequent. When she asked about work, his answers became shorter. “Just business,” he would say. She believed him because trusting him had become a habit. One evening, after a twelve-hour shift at the hospital, Ada came home exhausted. The house felt unusually tidy. Emeka was sitting at the dining table, his hands clasped together like a man preparing to deliver bad news. She knew before he spoke.“Sit down,” he said quietly. Ada didn’t sit. Her heart had already started beating too fast. “I think… I think we need to talk about our future,” he continued. The words sounded rehearsed, like lines from a speech he had practiced in the mirror. “What future?” she asked. He avoided her eyes. “There are things about myself I’ve been realizing,” he said. “Things about what I want.” Ada felt a strange calm settle over her, the kind people sometimes feel just before a storm hits. “And what do you want, Emeka?” He exhaled slowly. “I want a different life.”The room felt smaller suddenly. “Different from what?” she asked. “Different from this marriage.”The words landed like a stone dropped into still water. For a moment she thought she had misunderstood him. “You’re joking,” she said. But he wasn’t. There was someone else. He admitted it slowly, carefully, as though he was explaining a complicated business decision instead of breaking a woman’s heart. A younger woman he had met during a conference in Dubai. He said things like “It just happened” and “I didn’t plan this.” Ada listened without interrupting. Her mind drifted to memories she hadn’t thought about in years. The night she stayed awake beside him when he had malaria, wiping his forehead with a damp cloth. The afternoon she defended him to her parents when they said he was “too unstable.” The countless meals she cooked after coming home exhausted, just because she knew he had forgotten to eat.She thought about all the small sacrifices that had quietly built the life he was now walking away from. Finally she spoke. “Did you ever love me?” Emeka looked at her then, and for a moment she saw the old version of him The man who once waited in a bank line making terrible jokes. “I did,” he said softly. “Did?” she repeated. The word echoed in the room. Silence returned again, heavier than before. After that night, everything moved quickly. Papers were filed. Furniture was divided. Friends picked sides or disappeared entirely. Three months later, Emeka was gone. Ada stayed in the same apartment for a while, even though every corner carried memories that stung. Sometimes she would catch herself reaching for her phone to tell him something before remembering he was no longer part of her life. The hardest part wasn’t the anger, It was the quiet moments when she wondered how someone could walk away so easily from a story they had built together. One evening, almost a year later, Ada sat on the balcony again. The power had gone out just like it used to years before. The air was warm, and the city hummed with distant traffic. But something inside her felt different. For the first time in months, she realized she wasn’t waiting for him anymore. The woman who had once believed her life depended on a man had slowly learned something unexpected: Some people leave. But the strength you gave them while they were building themselves… Sometimes becomes the strength you use to rebuild yourself.

Dating for 13 years is mad. Why be in a relationship for that long, when you know you are not getting married to her ? This is wicked. How many abortion has she done in the process of this relationship ? What led to you breaking up with her ? did she cheat, was there a health condition ? These are the only grounds to break-up in a relationship of that magtitude except any other reason you need to explain. You couldn't even man-up to do it physically. If wickedness was a person, obviously your name should be written.

If you want to make more money, the ROI on “unscalable” work is about to go through the roof. Magic Moments: - Handwritten thank-you notes - Sending flowers (to clients and friends alike) - Calling (not texting) when you need something - Showing up in person when an email would've been fine Costs almost nothing. In a world where every interaction is getting sanded down into a frictionless automated nothing... humanity hits like a defibrillator.
