The most powerful antibiotic you’ve never heard of was sitting under scientists’ noses for decades. A team from the University of Warwick and Monash University has discovered a hidden molecule that’s over 100 times stronger than existing antibiotics against drug-resistant bacteria like MRSA and VRE. It’s called pre-methylenomycin C lactone – and it was quietly lurking inside a well-known bacterium studied since the 1950s. Streptomyces coelicolor is a familiar name in microbiology, known for producing the antibiotic methylenomycin A. But no one had tested the intermediate compounds created during its production – until now. By deleting specific genes in the bacterium’s biosynthetic pathway, researchers uncovered two previously unknown intermediates. One of them, pre-methylenomycin C lactone, turned out to be a game-changer: 100x more active against Gram-positive bacteria than methylenomycin A. The compound worked exceptionally well against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE), two of the deadliest superbugs on the World Health Organization’s priority list. Even more promising: in lab tests, the bacteria didn’t develop resistance to the compound – a rare outcome in antimicrobial research. ["Discovery of Late Intermediates in Methylenomycin Biosynthesis Active against Drug-Resistant Gram-Positive Bacterial Pathogens." Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2025]

I listed my old iPhone 14 Pro on a marketplace app for $500. A buyer messaged me, offering full price, but asked to meet at a well-lit gas station because it was late. It felt safe enough. We met under the bright LED lights near the pumps at 10:15 PM. The buyer looked completely normal...a college-aged guy in a hoodie. He handed me five crisp $100 bills. I handed over the factory-reset phone. He checked it, nodded, thanked me, and we went our separate ways. I drove home feeling great about a clean, easy sale. At 10:45 PM, my phone lit up with a message. “You scammed me. This phone is blacklisted and the screen is a cheap replica. I want my money back right now.” I was furious. “What? No it isn't. I bought it directly from Apple. I have the receipt.” The buyer replied with a video...

"I want to dye like a Viking" wasn’t pride. It was strategy He knew Aella keelling him would start a war. Sons + prophecy + public death = 10,000 Northmen coming for England. @Dave_it_up @Friesein @hannahspierMD I developed DM II and htn after my first Covid infection. I lost my sense of smell for 6 months. It is really hard to justify paying more than $25 for a meal that tastes like cardboard no matter what it is. Field Peas or Filet Minion, when you’re full, you’re full.

We’re a primary care practice in Vermont. We implemented a practice-wide protocol screening every patient at every encounter for recent SARS-CoV-2 infection history. What we’re observing in our panel is not consistent with a psychosomatic framework. We’re seeing measurable, objective increases in new-onset hypertension, acute cardiovascular events, new-onset allergic disease, and new-onset type 2 diabetes mellitus, all temporally correlated with infection history. These are not symptom reports. These are clinical findings.

This whole thread is now proving the point of protectiveness of the illness narrative! I’m not saying you aren’t suffering. I’m saying these disorders have a deeper psychological origin and should be treated as such before it becomes your identity.
Hannah Spier, MD@hannahspierMD

One thing I have noticed about patients with diagnoses such as fibromyalgia, ME/CFS, and increasingly Long COVID is how often the conversation revolves around explaining why they cannot move forward. There’s an extraordinary effort devoted to protecting the illness narrative.

I need a replacement for alcohol that lets me get fucked up in a pro-social way on a regular basis but which doesn’t tank my mental health. Do not say weed. I do not enjoy weed, unfortunately.
