We are coming from the city of Kostiantynivka. There is heavy shelling there now; it is very terrifying. Houses are burning, russian they are dropping aerial bombs on the city and the surrounding areas, and using everything else they can to cause harm... we decided to leave the city for good, as there is nothing left there. We also have health issues and need to get to a hospital, which is where we are headed now. We lived in Kostiantynivka our whole lives. When we realized we had to get out of the city, we took our bicycles and set off through dangerous districts and zones at our own peril. Everything we managed to take with us-everything that survived, is on our bikes. Our parents' houses burned down, and our own house is half-burned; we had to put the fire out ourselves. We are in a heavy state right now, both mentally and physically. And our son died-our only child. He looked after us, helped us, and used to cycle to the one remaining shop; he was killed on his way home. We buried him five months ago in our own yard, near the apple tree. In the city and the surrounding areas, civilians are burying their relatives and neighbors right next to their homes. We are walking... and we can hear drones flying behind us. We are walking now with the hope of reaching the evacuation points.

The 19th-century Democratic Party of Lincoln’s killers, the KKK founders, Jim Crow architects, and Confederates is the same party that, after the Civil Rights Act in 1964 and the Southern Strategy in the 1970s, became today’s Republican Party. The white Southern segregationists who lynched Black Americans, ran the KKK, and waved Confederate flags didn’t stay Democrats. They followed Strom Thurmond, who literally switched parties in 1964 over civil rights. They followed George Wallace’s voters into the GOP. Nixon’s own strategist Kevin Phillips wrote about the Southern Strategy openly. Lee Atwater, Reagan’s strategist, gave a famous interview admitting the party realigned racial appeals into coded language. Today’s Republican Party holds the South. Today’s Democratic Party holds the cities and the diverse coalitions. The voters didn’t become different people in 1964. The parties realigned around them. Every serious historian of American politics, including conservative ones, acknowledges this. The meme works only if you pretend party labels are eternal and voters and ideologies don’t move between them. They do. They have. The Democrats of 1860 are not the Democrats of 2026. The Republicans of 1860 are not the Republicans of 2026. Lincoln himself wouldn’t recognize either party today, and he certainly wouldn’t be in the one that flies Confederate flags and pardoned 1,500 people who attacked the Capitol. The historical facts on the meme are mostly accurate. The implication that today’s parties carry those legacies is exactly backwards.
