@yegvalleyLRT 40 minutes sitting on this Valley Line train and no announcements of delays yet @takeETSalert ? Terrible communication from all parties involved. I haven't heard any platform announcements from @yegvalleyLRT Is there even a contingency plan? Buses running yet? Learn from Calgary

Our TransEd crews are working hard in bitter conditions today to clear snow and ice from the rail switches, ensuring Valley Line SE trains keep running to serve our riders. #yegtransit

@TransitYEG @takeETSalert @yegvalleyLRT They're not going to do maintenance like regular window cleaning or glass repairs that can be done anytime during a shutdown. Instead, shut downs are used to complete work that requires prolonged track access and work that requires traction power shutdowns.

@takeETSalert @yegvalleyLRT Hi Transit Teams, I noticed that cleaning and much-needed maintenance were part of the Valley Line closure for the 21st. However, I didn’t see any power washing, cleaner windows, or repairs at any of the stops.

@yegventures @takeETSalert Therefore never a chance to sell out a Canadian streetcar system and therefore no chance for any sort of GM conspiracy to even take place.

@yegventures @takeETSalert Another thing... So many American transit operations were private operations, with some being private into the 1960's and 70's. In contrast, the majority of Canadian operations have been municipally operated before WWII, a lot since their inception the the early 1900's.

Did you know: Edmonton was the first city with a population under one million in North America and the third city in Canada to have an LRT system? What is your first memory of taking the LRT? #Yeg #YegTransit #CapitalLine Photos courtesy of the City of Edmonton Archives

@yegventures @takeETSalert If you read the published books on the various Canadian transit systems, the basic problems post WWII were streetcar systems needed rebuilding, ridership decreasing, costs increasing and trolleybuses presenting a viable and cheaper alternative. There were exceptions of course.

@yegventures @takeETSalert Yeah, in the US. But I wanted to know how it pertains to Canada. No NCL in Canada... When most streetcar systems shut down in Canada, the main bus vendor was CCF Brill, and a lot of streetcar systems were replaced with trolleybuses.

@takeETSalert What were the first two cities in Canada with an LRT system of this design? Also, it's misleading because nearly all the major cities had streetcars/trams in the 1900s before the great removal by the GM bus mandate, which are all considered a form of light rail.

@TransitYEG As inflation goes up, and hence the cost to operate transit, if you don't raise fares how do you maintain the transit service we have? Raising taxes alone isn't the answer. Suggest more critical thinking rather than easy sound bites if you want to advocate for transit.

@YEGbusriders That's terrible that @takeETSalert didn't know the correct level of service they were providing on November 11. Another example of ETS's abysmal communication. Would be a great place for an advocacy group to hold ETS's feet to the fire.

@swagnillaice @CdnChange Your petition is lying by saying paper fare products won't be accepted after December 9. They will be valid until the end of 2025. Also, Arc is better for less financially stable. Don't have to put out $27.75 for tickets to get a discounted rate or $100 in one shot for a pass.

The cost of repairing all of these LRTs cars after an LRT vs. Vehicle crash has to be getting more expensive than installing crossing arms, no? This is just going to keep happening for years to come, especially once new the lines open up. #YegTraffic #YegTransit #Yeg

@takeETSalert Could priority not be given to the southbound trains from Clareview that are full of people trying to get to work/school on time, rather than the empty northbound trains coming from Churchill station?

#yegtransit @takeETSalert good to see ETS bus drivers leading by example by disregarding signage and crossing tracks where they're not supposed to. Why was a fence never built here?

@gisellegeneral @Dee_Liberate Surely you are aware of the lack of funding for replacement buses? With the money council added at the SCBA, ETS's replacement plans are still $200 million+ short. 11 buses 2024, 6 buses 2025, and 5 buses 2026. 38-40 added for 2025. Plus 20 growth. Well short of needs.

@Dee_Liberate 100% agreed! So far 40% of the buses have AC and there's an ongoing process of retrofit orders buses and buying the new ones with AC. I bet it's a funding limitation. Hopefully the % increases to close to 100 by next year. 😬

This is wild. Buses should be required to have AC and heat. We live in an extreme climate. (And it's getting more extreme.) If you want mass adoption of public transit, it should be so fast, convenient, comfy, and affordable that it is easier than driving. #yegtransit
Giselle General (she/her)@gisellegeneral

Happy Friday! Trying to smile while hoping I won't slide off these slick plastic seats while bussing to work this morning. 🤣 On a serious note, commuting during rush hour in buses with no AC is rough this week - I worry about the #yegTransit drivers.
