@AcademicChatter Figure out why you are doing the degree. Is it a credential for an industry job you want? Are you aiming to be a college professor and if so, what type of professor? ‘I’m passionate about the subject’ doesn’t count because you can be passionate without a credential

Nothing like packing for a move to make you realize how many books you have from the same publishers. @DukePress @NYUpress I'm looking at you! (And thank you for the relatively consistent sizing!)

Something fun (or, rather, "fun") I came across while collecting other articles. From @Esquire 1978

Which 30 Rock fictional project do you think was the best one (i.e. highest quality/most entertaining), in a universe in which they’re all real? My bet is on The Rural Juror.

@DrPetra @AcademicChatter Students come in with an idea of what research *looks* like, and that preconception leads to judgements of what counts and what doesn’t, especially regarding different fields and different methods. We should start by talking to them about what the activity of research *is*.

Just a Professor Lecturing Against the Wind
For the first time in my multi-year career I have received a paper from a student that consisted of one sentence. The sentence is: I do not care for this assignment and am abstaining.

@JSRichman A sandwich that is like a sub or a hoagie. Father’s from Boston, mother’s from Maryland, I grew up outside of Philadelphia so I’ve got variety in my sandwich terminology

@Buehlmeister I’m in the middle of Blacktongue Thief, and I’m confused. In Chapter 43 Kinch can’t understand the Ispanthian conversation even though it’s been established that he can understand all languages…and he doesn’t seem to notice this loss of ability

@CharlieEbersole Utilize. 90% of the time someone used something in a totally intended and predictable way, so just say used.

@ThomasJBillard Yep. Full marks. Which feels much less arbitrary to me then assigning numbers to assess writing assignments. Maybe it would be different if I assigned exams.

@EmilySaidel Interesting! I cynically feel like my students would freak out not knowing what their score was, or what “complete” meant. Does complete just translate to full marks?

Short of overthrowing the US public education system and waiting 18 years for students of that new system to finally arrive in my classroom, what can I do to break my students' fanatical obsession with "losing points" on assignments. You got a 93! Chill!

@ThomasJBillard I’m pretty convinced that putting numbers on writing assignments is a mismatch between activity and assessment

@ThomasJBillard This semester I’m trying complete or incomplete-with-opportunity-to-revise on everything. Ran into a few unanticipated situations that I’ll shift to account for next semester, but overall loving avoiding numerical/letter on individual assignments
