I covered yest the impact of the lack of offshore gas discoveries on the likelihood of war, 🕯️What to expect in the energy sector in a war scenario, 🕯️& prospects for energy sector reconstruction (hint: null). Even without a full-scale war, it's not looking good. ⏩ 1) More expensive fuel: oil is at $90 per barrel. Insurance for Lebanon will become more expensive. In addition to transport disruptions, ➡️ less fuel imports. Yet, at a higher cost, with no subsidies, in ongoing and acute financial and economic crises. Blackouts would increase even in the absence of direct attacks on power plants. 2) Low fuel storage capacity. 3) The 2 alternative power generation that residents have been relying on to mind the chronic national electricity utility supply shortage: diesel generators and rooftop solar PV, are at risk, despite that their decentralized model enhances energy security in such a scenario in theory. "The Gulf Arab states’ utility-scale energy storage market is expected to reach 1.5-2.5GW by 2027, compared to 0.1GW of capacity installed by 2021, despite limited policy support, and persistent market and financial challenges. Batteries are currently the largest source of ESS in the Gulf and are dominated by the UA. Very worrying how aggressively support for Palestinian liberation, 'support for Hamas', and 'anti-semitism' are being folded together in some quarters. Particularly given how important that elision of 'Palestine' and 'Hamas' is in enabling the current total assault on Gaza.
