Let’s talk about Richie Smallwood 🗣️
For so long, probably since Paul Coutts, we have been crying out for an older head in our midfield that can command and control games. We were often weak, feeble and inexperienced in the centre of the park for the best part of two or three years. We lacked nous and know how, and opposition teams would look to exploit us and play on our vulnerabilities.
Not anymore.
Fast forward to deadline day in the January window of this year, we saw the arrival of 35 year old Richie Smallwood on loan from Tranmere Rovers. Since that moment, our midfield has been the complete opposite of the aforementioned problems. A transformative signing.
Here is his Bristol Rovers career, so far, in numbers:
📊 11 games
⏱️ Minutes played - 845
✅ 7.13 average FotMob rating
🦶 Touches - 524
🎯 Accurate passes - 262/377 (69%)
🪄 Chances created - 9
⏩ Passes into final third - 106
❎ Accurate crosses - 5/26 (19%)
☄️ Accurate long balls - 38/94 (40%)
🤦🏻♂️ Dispossessed - 3
🪨 Defensive contributions - 58
😡 Tackles - 29
🧱 Blocks - 3
🥊 Clearances - 16
🪖Headed clearances - 5
📚 Interceptions - 10
⛑️ Recoveries - 41
🏃🏻♂️ Dribbled past - 6
⚔️ Ground duels won - 40/64 (63%)
✈️ Aerial duels won - 20/27 (74%)
🧠 Fouls won - 9
⛔️ Fouls committed - 14
Whether you’re a numbers/statistics person or not, you cannot argue the fact that Smallwood has arguably been our most consistent player every single game. Constantly delivering a minimum 7/10 performance, week in, week out.
He’s the leader we have been desperately missing in the middle of the park for a long while now. It’s like having another manager on the pitch, and that is no exaggeration. He is encouraging to other players when they make a mistake, but also demands effort and endeavour from his fellow peers, and will happily let his thoughts be heard when they fall below par.
My favourite part however is how he leads by example. This was summed up perfectly yesterday in the 75th minute when Joel Senior lost the ball in the final third, and Accrington Stanley broke at pace. Richie got his head down, and sprinted as fast he could to get back and get his body on the line for the cause. We won the ball back and the West Stand erupted in applause, due to the sheer battle on show from our defensive midfielder.
He fights for our badge, and has bought in to the cause as if he’s a boyhood Gashead.
What more could we possibly ask for?
Richie Smallwood, it has not gone unnoticed. What a player 👏🏼

@Lawrenc52859337 @FootieBlackList @WFCOfficial @crawleytown @wokingfc You should make an account tracking the millions of white managers
English

@FootieBlackList @WFCOfficial @crawleytown @wokingfc Fair play to them but if someone was to do this about white managers people would be calling it racist.
This in itself is discrimination.
Im going to get a lot of hate about speaking the truth - from both black and white - i don't care, the truth hurts!!!!!

A new chapter. A familiar story of impact. 🖤
Darren Byfield continues his unbeaten run at @WFCOfficial, Colin Kazim-Richards makes a winning start in his first game in charge of @crawleytown, and Jermain Defoe steps into management at @wokingfc.
Across the men’s professional game, Black coaches are not waiting for opportunities. They are earning them, taking them and delivering.
Each appointment carries weight. Each performance challenges perceptions. Each result helps to shift what leadership in football looks like and who it represents.
Because visibility creates belief, and belief creates pathways. 👏

🥇🚨| #Tottenham may be forced into another short-term appointment. De Zerbi is interested if they stay up, while Pochettino is focused on the World Cup.
Ben Davies, Redknapp, Hoddle, Sherwood and Hughton are options. Checks on Hütter; Dyche available. @Matt_Law_DT

@HotspurLane Bit scummy using Dier’s photo. But I suppose you’re desperate for interactions to make a couple of pennies on your blue tick account
