Today, we heard firsthand accounts from Indian seafarers who returned after enduring detention, fear, and life-threatening conditions in the Iran conflict zone.
What they described is not just a crisis. It is a systemic failure to protect those who keep global trade moving.
Seafarers were detained without clarity, accused without evidence, and left navigating a war zone with damaged vessels, no communication, and no certainty of survival. Families back home lived in constant fear, while many others remain stranded or imprisoned even now.
Let us be clear. These are not isolated incidents.
Hundreds, possibly thousands, of Indian seafarers remain exposed across high-risk ports like Bandar Abbas, with vessels being targeted and movements restricted despite clearances. The risks are real, immediate, and escalating.
A seafarer is not responsible for cargo.
A seafarer is not a decision-maker.
A seafarer is a worker, following orders to earn a livelihood.
Yet, when things go wrong, it is the seafarer who suffers first and suffers most.

FSUI demands:
Immediate and proactive intervention for all Indian seafarers in conflict zones
Protection not just on Indian-flag vessels, but across foreign-flag vessels where the majority of Indians serve
Clear accountability mechanisms so that operators—not crew—are held responsible
Urgent action to secure the release of those still detained
This is not about policy.
This is about people.
We cannot wait for the next incident to react. The time to act is now.
