this is insanely bad, btw. yes facebook and google should be broken up and regulated but this entire trial is going to pave the way for age verification and gutting Section 230, which is the reason social media even exists. it will lead to censorship of non-harmful content

Say hello to Michigan House Bill 4429 and Senate Bill 284. This is Michigan’s “Digital Age Assurances Act”. And it would require ALL Operating Systems (including Linux & Windows) to implement “commercially reasonable” age verification of every user on every system. This Operating System Age Verification bill stalled out last year, but has been taken back up and re-sent to a Michigan House committee last week. It’s worth noting that this bill was introduced in the House of Representatives by a group of Democrats, but was introduced in the Senate by a group of Republicans. There is a hearing in the Senate today about Section 230.
Without Section 230, there is no internet. Not there's no specific websites, no specific features..no INTERNET. Everything from social media to Wikipedia's existence exists because of Section 230.
