This week, Budapest Lectures asked a defining question about our time: Is the global order transforming?
Former Australian UN Ambassador @FifieldMitch examined the future of multilateral institutions, UN reform, EU strategic dilemmas, Trump’s negotiation style, and the room for maneuver of small and middle powers in a more openly power driven world.
The takeaway was realism without fatalism. The rules based order is not collapsing, but power politics is becoming more explicit. For smaller and non nuclear states, rules still matter, yet alliances and strategic diversification remain essential.

In 2018 as Australian Communications Minister, I legislated a world-first regime to target the non-consensual sharing of intimate images. Giving power to our eSafety Commissioner to issue ‘removal notices’ plus criminal penalties of upto 7 years prison & fines of upto $500,000.

As Co-Chair of GA Revitalization in 2023 with @FifieldMitch, we worked to make women visible in the Rules of Procedure of the @UN General Assembly. It didn’t happen then, but El Salvador 🇸🇻kept pushing.
Last week #UNGA80 approved it: feminine pronouns & gender-specific nouns in all 6 UN languages.
Reading the first Spanish edition, I was deeply moved. This is not just symbolic, it corrects decades of invisibility of women in multilateral diplomacy.
