"It is important to demonstrate that things can be done when we work together. Not necessarily because we are like-minded, but because joining different perspectives in a common framework has a significant potential for impact." @_PeterMaurer on why anti-corruption Collective Action is essential if we're to solve today's global challenges: baselgovernance.org/blog/mobilisin… He was speaking at the opening of our International Collective Action Conference in Basel last week. Photos, videos and more to come – follow @FightBribery.

Money is power – and with great power comes great responsibility. Especially when that money consists of public resources, and/or is intended to be used to deliver public goods. Our last panel at the International Collective Action Conference looked at how development finance institutions and investors can provide incentives for business integrity in their portfolios and projects. Huge thanks to our distinguished speakers for sharing what your institutions are doing to prevent corruption and promote strong systems for integrity and compliance in your spheres of influence: 🔹 Caroline Eriksen – @NorgesBank Investment Management 🔸 Berna Gungenci Kilincoglu – @EBRD 🔹 John Versantvoort – @ADB_HQ 🔸 Huma Yusuf – @BritishIntInv Thanks also to our excellent moderator Cristina Ritter of the United Nations @globalcompact.

Standing up for integrity and doing the right thing can feel lonely in some contexts – or worse. Through #CollectiveAction and peer learning platforms, individuals and companies who are committed to ethical principles can join forces and support each other. The speakers in today’s opening panel are part of the Basel Institute’s Mentoring Programme and its close-knit global community of organisations working with the private sector on anti-corruption: collective-action.com/get-involved/m… 🇨🇦 @NoahArsh – Canadian Centre of Excellence for Anti-Corruption 🇵🇪 Oscar Caipo Ricci – Empresarios por la Integridad 🇲🇼 Joe Chingani – @CoSTransparency 🇩🇰 Ken Graversen – @fafpicom Thanks to our brilliant moderator Liza Young and to all members of the Mentoring Programme for your willingness to share and support each other.

@FrancoisValeri3, Chair of @anticorruption, kicked off day 2 of our International Collective Action Conference in Basel with a powerful speech emphasising the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration and the inclusion of civil society. To catalyse the power of Collective Action to combat corrupt systems and power networks, we need to get better at: ✅ Reaching out to all companies –> including key players like the financial sector and state-owned enterprises. ✅ Getting to the right people within a company –> the leaders and decision makers, as well as compliance and risk management professionals. ✅ Achieving ethical transformation within a company –> so that ethical principles are instilled within all processes and staff, and in the relationships between the companies and their external stakeholders. Thank you François for your inspiring words and for your – and your organisation's – support to anti-corruption Collective Action over the years. Follow @FightBribery for updates on the conference and more.

❓How can we be sure that companies’ #compliance programmes are effective at addressing corruption risks in their operations? Through #CollectiveAction, compliance and business leaders are making great progress in assessing the effectiveness of compliance efforts. Four of these leaders shared their experiences in our third panel, moderated by Vanessa Hans: 🇧🇷 Rafael Gomes – @novonorsa and @oec_eng 🇳🇬 Ayotola Jagun – @Oando_PLC 🇹🇭 Vibeke Lyssand Leirvag – Felicia Design and @jfcctthailand 🇩🇪 Anke Struckmeier-Eickenberg, @METRO_Politics and @afin_giz A fascinating exchange on different ways in which business leaders can help raise standards of integrity and corporate governance across markets. Including among the huge number of SMEs that make up the majority of most countries’ economies and multinationals’ supply chains.

💡 "It's increasingly recognised that the crucial role of the private sector in preventing corruption extends way beyond compliance and internal efforts... ... The public sector can and should incentivise, institutionalise and invest in Collective Action so businesses can play that role." In our first panel discussion on regulatory and normative approaches that support Collective Action, Xiaohong Li of @UNODC moderated a star panel of government representatives from four continents: 🇫🇷 Isabelle Jegouzo – @AFA_Gouv 🇬🇭 Salifu Koray – @GhanaRevenue 🇺🇸 Brooke Stearns Lawson – @USAID 🇧🇷 Marcelo Pontes Vianna, Brazilian Office of the Comptroller General Fascinating to see how organisations from different continents and institutions find so many challenges in common and so many ideas to share. 👏

Some news from the 4th Anti-Corruption, Ethics & Compliance for Energy Sector 2024 Conference, organised by Prospero Events Group last week 🌟 Niels Wohlwend, Chief Compliance Officer at the Basel Insitute on Governance, delivered an insightful presentation on "Managing Third-Party Ethics & Compliance Risks." Key takeaways from his session include: 🔸 A risk-based approach is likely to be most efficient; 🔸 Due diligence is important, but not sufficient: the implementation of a full cycle Third Party Management is fundamental; 🔸 Clear roles & responsibilities are essential. Niels joined an impressive lineup of speakers who are setting the standards for best practices in the industry. Our gratitude to the organisers for facilitating this event! #Ethics #Compliance #AntiCorruption
