This is the thing that a lot of people with small children don't understand. I love transit, I know how much better it is for the environment, safety, etc. You don't need to lecture me. But I also am not going to put my child in uncomfortable situations if I don't have to.

This Spanish city centre has been car-free for 20 years. 12k people have moved into the centre since the ban. The Mayor says vehicles don’t have more right to public space than people — & he’s been re-elected 4 times since banning cars. Pontevedra via @WEF

Biking home this evening, a loose tarp from a construction dumpster flew out and grabbed me in high winds and I went down. Laceration over my eye and at urgent care getting stitches.
So thankful that Hannah wasn't with me and that my helmet took most of the damage.

We need bike networks that drive equity.
Too often when we think about bikers, we ignore people who bike to work, like restaurant workers who are biking home late at night when they are most difficult to see and the trip is most dangerous.
We need bike paths that work for all.

Urbanism is obsessed with quantitative data like population growth rates, median house prices & transit wait times. But the true indicators of great cities— joy, racial harmony, stewardship, hope, belonging, connection to the land etc.—are often qualitative, embodied & sacred.

@JakeAnbinder Had a professor @SyracuseU who required us to list Great Society programs in an exam. They’re burned into my head (well, some are): Medicare, Medicaid, Older American Act, ESEA, NEA, Office of Economic Opp., & if they are “programs” the Voting Rights Act & Civil Rights Act.
