Rocky recognizes that many people either refuse to come to downtown Salt Lake City anymore, or, when they do, they are likely to have a terrible experience resulting from the filth, drugged-out people, and other consequences of the failure of leadership by the Mendenhall administration. Just looking the other way and refusing the enforce the laws or to provide compassionate help for those who need drug and metal health treatment and housing is undermining the quality of life for almost everyone in Salt Lake City—residents, homeless people, and businesses alike. Just today, we learned that Mid City Salon, which has been in the heart of our downtown for over 30 years, is leaving because of one horrible incident after another, ignored by the Mendenhall administration. Many hardships have been inflicted on Mid City Salon, which have been brushed off by the police, who explain that the Mayor has told them just to tell offenders to "move along". Mid City Salon is now joining the ranks of such great longtime businesses, such as Southam Gallery and Latter-Day Brides, all of which have left downtown Salt Lake City because of the utter failures of leadership by Mayor Erin Mendenhall and her administration to protect the quality of life in a city that has been so sorely neglected and degraded during the last four years.
