I assume Orban conceded because the opposition's victory is too staggeringly large to deny. It's important for us to remember that, were he in Orban's position, Trump would never concede, no matter how large the margin.

@Mylovanov Oversimplified. Some NATO members certainly did fight in Vietnam (for example.) The point is not NATO, it is that the Euros are rejecting any sort of common cause with the US. Which is their right but in that context the US has many interests outside of Europe and no allies.

McFaul: Trump doesn't get it. NATO is a defensive alliance. NATO didn't fight in Vietnam with us, with the French in Algeria, with the Portuguese in Angola and Mozambique, or with the UK in the Falklands. The only time they fought together was after Sep 11.

The question: what is Europe going to do without the US in NATO, is the wrong one. The US is already not guaranteeing Europe's security. The only question is how quickly Europe restructures its own perfectly adequate resources to contain Russia without the US.

I am genuinely struggling to understand this logic. If the rest of the world is willing to pay a small toll to Iran to keep oil flowing and stabilise markets, then why does the U.S. feel the need to block all shipping, especially when it is not dependent on that oil?

The problem is that Iran's demands are absurdly maximalist: * Permanent Hormuz tolls * Reparations * Unblock frozen assets * No restrictions on uranium enrichment * Ceasefire includes Lebanon It's what you would only reasonably demand after a crushing military victory!
