داخل مبنى شبه مدمر في البلدة القديمة بمدينة غزة ينحني متطوعون فوق أكوام الركام والغبار، يبحثون بصبر عن كتب ومخطوطات نجت من الدمار الذي أصاب مكتبة المسجد العمري الكبير خلال الحرب الإسرائيلية على قطاع غزة.

The Great Mosque of Gaza was bombed by the British in 1917 when Ottomans were using as a store for provisions and ammunition. The bombardment caused the ammunition stored inside to explode, destroying the library & much of the rest of the building, including its minaret.

These Palestinians opened a new library in Gaza, the Phoenix Library (@phoenixlibrary1). They collected hundreds of books, including some pulled from the rubble of Israel’s destruction.

Palestinian volunteers are pulling what they can from the ruins of the Great Omari Mosque library in Gaza City, a place that once held 20,000 books, now reduced to a few thousand after the zionist entity’s bombardment shattered one of Gaza’s oldest knowledge archives.

Dr. Hanin Al‑Amssi, executive director of the Eyes on Heritage Foundation, has dedicated herself since the start of the genocide to saving Gaza’s archives and manuscripts. Amid repeated displacements, her sole focus has been rescuing what she can from under the rubble. She currently oversees a local team working to salvage historical manuscripts in Gaza’s Manuscripts and Antiquities Department, as well as at other sites devastated by Israeli attacks. She actively participates in field operations, searching and excavating manuscripts from the debris. Using her own resources, Dr. Hanin purchased manuscripts she found being sold in the streets as if they were disposable paper. She also tracked historical documents spotted in journalists’ footage, sometimes misused by street vendors, retrieved them from northern Gaza, and placed them into proper preservation and restoration processes, fighting to protect Gaza’s cultural heritage from destruction.
