In our statement for World Water Day, we called for #Responsible Water Governance for Peace. We noted that to attain this, it is critical to recognize that women play an important role in the provision, management, and protection of water in communities. Women are the primary providers, managers and users of water, however global statistics highlight that less than 17% of women make up the labour force of water, sanitation, and hygiene in developing economies. Guided by Sustainable Development Goal five on Gender Equality, it is critical to ensure women’s full and effective participation, as well as equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic, and public life. Plastic waste is a serious environmental and social problem that requires urgent and coordinated action from different stakeholders, including governments, industries, and consumers. Industrial processes and product use are major sources of plastic waste, which can have negative impacts on the environment and human health. To manage plastic waste, some possible strategies are: Avoiding or actively banning single-use plastics, such as disposable packaging, straws, cups, and cutlery, which are often discarded after one use and contribute to plastic pollution Reusing plastic packaging rather than immediately disposing of it, such as by refilling plastic bottles, containers, and drums with the same or different products. Repurposing plastic packaging, such as plastic drums, into other useful items, such as furniture, planters, or storage bins. Producing recycled plastic packaging, such as plastic drums, rather than creating new packaging from virgin materials, which can save energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and conserve natural resources. Reducing plastic production, including through innovation, better product design, and developing environmentally friendly alternatives, such as biodegradable or compostable plastics, which can reduce the amount of plastic waste generated and facilitate its disposal.
