Yesterday, we had an engagement with students and human rights advocates from the @CHR_HumanRights at University of Pretoria, @UPTuks's Master of Laws program in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa. This meeting was part of our ongoing collaboration with the Centre, which has partnered with @Freedomhive_Ug to advocate against impunity and judicial interference by the executive. Happening now in Gwanda! @ZELA_Infor is supporting community participants to the ongoing consultations by @MinistryMines which will shape an Artisanal & Small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM) strategy, Value Addition and Beneficiation Strategy and Minerals Development Policy. We push for ASM development because with an estimated 500,000 people involved in ASM, the sector plays a vital role in our economy, benefiting at least 1.5 million people. Hence, the need to regulate and empower ASMers for sustainable growth through the development of an #ASM policy! Our focus is also on human rights in the mining sector which are denied because of informality. No legal registration means workers have no negotiation power, face poor working conditions, and health risks which expose them to injuries and fatalities, but without remedy. We advocate for a policies that promote responsible business practices and sourcing standards in the mining sector, including among ASMers. This includes corporate accountability, anti-money laundering, and anti-corruption measures. Let's encourage sharing and learning of best practices through national and international initiatives, forums, and platforms. This week we are attending consultations by the @MinistryMines on the Minerals Development Policy, Value Addition and Beneficiation Strategy and the Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM) Strategy. Informed by our model minerals development policy, we call for the inclusion of #responsible_mining practices in the national minerals development policy. We also call for value addition and beneficiation plans that allow for public access to information to increase transparency and strengthen the fiscal-mining regime to harness the country’s mineral potential. On the #ASGM Strategy, our focus is on the formalization and improvement of artisanal and small-scale mining sector governance and management and the promotion of alternative livelihood sources for miners. This will facilitate #sustainable, traceable, profitable and responsible artisanal and small-scale mining practices. The Zimbabwe Environmental Outlook report from @EMAeep notes a rise in environmental crimes, including poaching and illegal mining. The report raises concern over construction happening in ecologically sensitive areas among other environmental challenges. In response to such issues, with support from @SaveChildrenZIM and in partnership with @EMAeep @Zimparks and the Zimbabwe Climate Change Coalition, @ZELA_Infor is holding a national consultative meeting for the establishment of specialized Environmental Courts (ECs) in Zimbabwe. This groundbreaking dialogue is being conducted to garner support for and contribute to the implementation of the environmental governance policy agenda as is provided for in the Environmental Management Agency's 2021-2025 Strategic Plan.
