"Nobody feels the joy of the Eid as much as children, and when we were children, we could hardly contain our excitement while waiting for it: pocket money, new outfits, new shoes. We would put on these valuable garments and go out to show them off to the other children of the neighbourhood." - literature laureate Naguib Mahfouz Eid Mubarak! عيد مبارك Wishing a happy Eid to everyone that celebrates. In 1988 the literature prize was awarded to Naguib Mahfouz who, through works rich in nuance - now clear-sightedly realistic, now evocatively ambiguous - has formed an Arabian narrative art that applies to all mankind. "If we work together we all end up having a better world." Born #OTD in 1943, Mario Molina was awarded the 1995 chemistry prize for showing that CFCs damage the ozone layer. He was passionate about solutions to look after Earth. Thanks to his work CFCs were banned worldwide.

#DidYouKnow Andre Geim is the only laureate to have received an IgNobel Prize. He was awarded his 2010 #NobelPrize in Physics for creating graphene and his IgNobel for using magnets to levitate a frog. #WorldFrogDay

The @nytimes piece today by @ByrneEdsal13590 highlights a concern I share: “If we stay on the current path, the risk of extreme concentration — both economic and political — is very real.” In work with @zhitzig, we ask why AI may shift the balance between dispersed knowledge and centralized control.

📁 Geoffrey Hinton, deep learning pioneer and Turing Award winner, says AI will not be an obedient assistant. It will be more like a child. Smarter than us. And eventually making its own decisions. The challenge is not controlling it. It is making sure it cares about us.

The Trump Administration keeps throwing new arguments at the wall to see what might stick--but each one is worse than the last. This is an excellent piece by @eliavl explaining why Rubio's recent "double preemption" argument is a non-starter. justsecurity.org/133093/preempt…

I’m not much of a Habermas fan, but the one time I saw him (at a public lecture in 2006), I did come away very impressed with the depth of his moral conviction and the thoroughness of his ideological worldview. My generation of scholars will likely find it much harder to develop comparably deep convictions in such an unsettled and normatively ambiguous world. Habermas’s generation was blessed with greater value clarity, and perhaps cursed by it too. May he rest in peace.

Borrowing insights from cognitive science to inform AI research is one thing; treating cognitive science as AI’s epistemic foundation is another.
