I have often heard the cynical claim that “integrity is a luxury a poor man cannot afford.” Conversely, I have seen countless "rich" individuals who possess everything but a conscience. We have all witnessed the wealthy and the politically powerful systematically loot public funds, and we have seen those who already have "enough" compromise themselves just to stay in the shadow of power. It seems that for many, success is a license to abandon virtue. Here is my resolve: Integrity is not the absence of temptation—everyone has an Achilles’ heel. Rather, integrity is the conscious, repeated choice to stand by your principles, even when the odds are stacked against you and the cost of staying true is high. It is the refusal to be bought when everyone else has a price. I strongly believe that, more often than not, the man with nothing has the most to offer in terms of integrity. A poor man has already faced the world at its harshest; he has nothing left to lose, which gives him the ultimate freedom to speak the truth. Conversely, the rich man is often a prisoner of his own success. Because he is terrified of losing the status, the comfort, and the influence he has spent a lifetime building, he becomes remarkably easy to bend. For the fear of losing his seat at the table, he will almost always compromise the very principles that supposedly put him there. Wealth can be rebuilt and power can be stripped away, but once you trade your integrity, there is no currency on earth strong enough to buy it back. Happy Holidays people.
