Happy “Agony of Defeat Guy” Day if you’re observing it. 56 years ago today, March 21, 1970, a 22-year old Slovenian ski jumper Vinko Bogataj took the iconic spill at the World Ski Jumping Championships in West Germany. ABC stoped running Wide World of Sports in January 1998.

Military experts later confirmed that Chuck Norris and Walter Payton together on the same boat was temporarily the world’s fourth-strongest navy.

Chuck was an icon. I am grateful that I was able to work with him in multiple ways over the years, from promoting fitness to sharing the screen together. He was a badass, in real life and in Hollywood. His legend will be with us forever. My thoughts are with his family.

I'll always remember Chuck Norris as the man who changed the course of dodgeball history by casting the deciding vote that allowed Average Joes to play in the championship of the Las Vegas International Dodgeball Open where they upset the heavily favored Globo Gym Purple Cobras. RIP. 🙏

Happy 75th Birthday, Kurt Russell Kurt and John Carpenter gave us three iconic characters: Snake Plissken, R.J. MacReady, and Jack Burton. Jack’s my favourite, blundering through Big Trouble in Little China with zero clue is pure genius. Just don’t question his reflexes.

Germany has tried monarchy and republicanism. It's had fascism and socialism. German history is complex and fascinating. So I've teamed up with Chris Dillon from King's College London to launch a brand new podcast: REICHS AND REPUBLICS is out now. Find us on any platform 🧐

@RBrookhiser The divided family aspect of the Civil War is one of its most fascinating aspects. Both Lee and Stonewall had sisters who supported the Union; the border states like Kentucky really intrigue me, looking forward to reading that book by a CS KY soldier I got today..and the others!

@RBrookhiser It really was Anglo-French exhaustion induced reluctance that halted the AEF grime pushing on. The US had momentum, soldiers I’ve done work on were ready to press on and generally disappointed they didn’t get to take Berlin.

Britain snd France were exhausted, Russia had quit. Pershing broke the Germans’ last push.

@RBrookhiser I really don't think anyone could claim that "Wilson won WW1." It was 3/4 finished before he got there.

@RickyBobWeaver @RBrookhiser I read a book some years back on the Supreme Court case that gave Arlington back to Custis. He promptly sold the land back to the govt for 150k( over 5 million in today’s dollars) As he had no heirs I assume his surviving siblings and nephews got a nice payout upon his death.

Lee was a leader of a failed rebellion. The Taiping rebels failed too but at least they were responsible for 20-30 million deaths.

Hey, So Nuremberg is on Netflix now. In the cinema across South America, check local listings. Soon in Germany. It’s a great cast. Leo Woodall, Rami Malek, Colin Hanks, Mark O’Brien, Richard E. Grant, and the mighty Michael Shannon.

@RBrookhiser Having just been (and dined—the tomato bisque + grilled cheese was perfection on a cold day) there, the museum was very well done. It is also quite the story when it comes to historic preservation.
