@sparklyChicago @KatiePMcGrady Also just to be clear, the cost of providing an ND education didn't go down. They rearranged their budget priorities to cover the cost internally for more students rather than externally by charging tuition. That's what most colleges, of all kinds, can't do.

@sparklyChicago @KatiePMcGrady Right. Catholic colleges face the same challenges as other colleges of the same kind. If you depend on tuition dollars to survive, it's going to be tough when there are fewer tuition paying students out there

@sparklyChicago @KatiePMcGrady This will be good for ND students and families. It's a good thing. But more schools will close than will follow their path over the next 5-10 years. That's the grave situation of Catholic higher Ed, and small liberal arts colleges, generally.

@sparklyChicago @KatiePMcGrady Villanova's endowment is about $1 billion. Gtown and BC are around $4 billion. ND is $20. It is by far the wealthiest. More to the point, the average Catholic college depends on tuition to keep the lights on.

@KatiePMcGrady Let me try this a different way. What change do you imagine seeing outside of ND bc of this move? I assumed it is that other schools would be inspired to follow suit but maybe you are thinking of something else?

@VP264 @madlaw1071 But wouldn't news broken by a local reporter get picked up nationally pretty quickly? Or is about rewarding reporters the agents find useful. I could see national guys having more utility.

@madlaw1071 It's because the national guys have better relationships with the agents. The NFL and agents want their deals displayed on a global level not local.

Anyone notice that not a single local Buffalo Bills media guy, all with direct access to OBD, breaks any news on any signings or extensions? Not a single one. WTF do they guys get paid to do? They don't even get leaks or rumors, they're so far out of the loop.

@PhilWhittlesee @madlaw1071 You'd think the Bills beat reporters would cultivate relationships with some agents, though. Or is that only worth the time of a national reporter who can report on all the agency's clients?

The Bills don't leak. It doesn't benefit them. The agents do leak. It benefits both the agents and the players, generally. But why would an agent ever leak to a small-time reporter in Buffalo? If you're going to leak, leak to a national-coverage reporter who is going to be covering all of the other leaks on all of the major networks, shows, and platforms.

@Martello16 Because practicing would be considered work? While simply being present in the US as a Canadian doesn't require any paper work. could be the difference.

@Sneaky_Beane @SalSports I'm not sure. They have an organic fanbase now since they've been around 3 decades and sure there are still a lot of transplants but also more and more native born. The Rays play in St Pete in an awful stadium so it's not ideal for people from Tampa to get to.

@SalSports Big time truth. The moment the Lightning take a step back that arena will be full of away team fans and nothing else. It will look like a Rays game

Totally true, actually. Tampa didn’t get a hockey team because they know or love hockey. They got one because there were so many people from actual hockey cities who moved there.

@SirMang77 @SalSports It was both. Florida was an attractive expansion market because of it fast growing population of which transplants from the northeast and Midwest made up a big chunk. Also Canadian snowbirds. Same with Arizona.

@SalSports They got one because the NHL wanted to expand its reach in the United States to get more fans and potenti revenue sources. Just like they expanded out west. Nothing to do with people from hockey cities moving there.
