Metallica Album Ranking from Worst to Best #10: 72 Seasons (2023) Have you ever felt anticipation for something (a movie, album etc.). You get really excited for it to come out. Then it does. You experience it. Then when it’s over you think “well that was…good?”. Then spend the next few weeks trying to convince yourself that what you experienced was actually good. That was me with this album. I want to like this album SOOOO BAD. I’ve listened to this thing countless times. Trying to have it land fully with me. But all I do is find the songs I like and go to those. My biggest issue with this album is that it just…exists. That’s it. There’s nothing really unique about. The riffs all kinda bland. The solos sound really tired. To me, Kirk just sounds like he’s running out of gas. And my other issue is…now look, I LOVE James Hetfield as a guitar player. But sometimes he can do too much. He tries to cram 50 riffs into one song, and it becomes hard to follow the songs at times. I do love his vocals on here. His age isn’t showing up on records yet. To me, this album starts SUPER strong with the title track and Shadows Follow. The ladder containing some of my favorite Metallica riffs ever. I was never a big fan of Screaming Suicide as a single. There were better options here to pick from. I think Lux Aeterna is really fun. I NEVER liked If Darkness Had A Son, even when I first heard it. Probably my least favorite of the album. Then I think the album closes well with Room Of Mirrors and Inamorata. Overall, I’ve tried to really like this album and maybe after more listens I will, but for now…it has to sit here in the ranking.
