You could argue that his decision to flee the air temple is exemplary, but if he hadn't done so, he would have died.

Good characters do extremely questionable things all of the time? Aang is one of my fav. character of all time but he did questionable things. She's an interesting and enjoyable character if you can look at her unbiased. Is she perfect? No. She's a victim of poor writing and they could have done so much better. Doesn't make her a trash character by design. The major flaw is just bad writing.

she's poorly written but it doesn't mean she's a trash character rofl. She's the avatar, that in itself is worth something because it's one of the coolest ideas for a main protagonist I've ever seen. That's like saying batman isn't a good character because there's been a bad movie.

bro the discourse around this is crazy. I really love ATLA and Aang is my goat but i like TLOK too and enjoy watching it. Korra is strong and a good character, she just got much worse quality writing and that's a lot of her problem. The way people scream from their soapbox about this avatar debate is wild.
