7 years ago today, we lost a true hero—Christopher Slutman—who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in Afghanistan. FDNY Ladder 17 → Ladder 27. U.S. Marine Corps, two tours. In 2013, he rescued a trapped civilian—earning an FDNY medal.

Today marks the 32nd anniversary of the Watts Street Fire. Firefighters Young and Siedenburg of Engine 24 and Captain Drennan of Ladder 5 made the ultimate sacrifice after suffering fatal burn injuries while searching for trapped residents. Their bravery will never be forgotten.

Jack Carr

In the early morning hours of March 16, 1984, the CIA Chief of Station in Beirut, William F. Buckley, left his apartment for the short drive to the U.S. Embassy as he had many times before. This morning would be different. As the former Army Special Forces soldier, combat veteran of Korea and Vietnam, CIA Special Activities Division operative, historian, librarian, Silver Star recipient x 2, and Purple Heart recipient eased his 1983 Renault into the street, two black Mercedes sedans boxed him in, blocking any chance of escape. While the drivers remained at the wheels, two members of Hezbollah rushed his car with AK-47s, forcing their target out of his Renault and into one of the Mercedes before speeding away. Three weeks later, President Reagan signed National Security Decision Directive 138, setting in motion what would later become known as Iran-Contra. William F. Buckley was brutally tortured at the hands of Hezbollah for fifteen months. In early June of 1985, he was buried in a shallow grave on the side of the road in the Shiite section of the city. His body would not be returned to the United States until December 1991. He is memorialized with the 51st star on the Memorial Wall at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, and was buried with full military honors in Section 59, Lot 346 of Arlington National Cemetery. His headstone reads: WILLIAM FRANCIS BUCKLEY LT COL US ARMY KOREA VIETNAM MAY 30 1928 JUN 3 1985 LEBANON SILVER STAR For more information on William Buckley and America’s secret war with Hezbollah, read BEIRUT RULES by @fred_burton and @Samuel_M_Katz

All I see on fire social media these is people saying a 24/72 schedule will fix recruitment. The fire service already has a recruitment problem, and now we’re supposed to hire enough people to staff an entirely new shift.

@drjoshfunk Indeed. Oftentimes practitioners lose sight. Post-op doesn't is always 100%, but a new normal. Proper rehab moves that as closer to 100%.

This week hit different. My better half had ACL surgery, plus a medial and lateral meniscus repair. This was the result of an injury suffered during her alumni basketball game. Watching the early post-op process up close, and not as a clinician, reminded me of something important: The beginning of the journey is the hardest part. Pain, uncertainty, dependency. The gap between where you are and where you want to be feels enormous in those first hours and days. It's easy for us as practitioners to fast-forward to progress & outcomes. Our patients can't. Being on this side of it gives me a deeper respect for every single person who walks through our doors. We don't just treat injuries. We carry people through some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Grateful for Rehab 2 Perform. Grateful for Karli's trust in the process. And grateful for the reminder of why we do this.

Local 22 Philadelphia Firefighters & Paramedics
Citizens, please be aware that the City has put in place an ill-advised plan during the snow emergency. They are having police officers certified as EMTs respond to medical and trauma dispatches normally handled by IAFF Local 22 paramedics and EMTs. We have no idea what equipment and experience they may have or if they even know the correct hospital to take patients to. We also believe  that State Law states that patients should be transported in certified medic units, not police vehicles. Be careful out there and stay safe.

This is what the extended response time gap looks like (red). When a ladder truck is unavailable, response distances increase and response times can follow. Our members will always respond — but they need the tools and apparatus in service to do the job safely and effectively.
