@DRDisabilityReb Agreed but she's wrong about BBC editing out all other instances. They did include others I heard during Cumming's monologue. I think they should've edited out when Michael B Jordan & Delroy Lindo were on stage (as apparently requested by Warner Bros). Better for all (& John) IMO

@JoolsJuevans @WingsScotland I think the BBC should donate any fine for broadcasting that part whilst editing out all the other bits. They landed him in it for sure. Maybe we call for the BBC to donate if anyone knows how?

@flynndirk @ArtyBagger @YouTube Untrue unfortunately. Someone live tweeted their outrage (with obviously zero knowledge or understanding) and it immediately went viral. They may not have been the only one so I’m not specifically picking on that person because, well, that would make me unkind.

@ArtyBagger @YouTube A great scene. But it's also important to remember that no-one in the BAFTA audience, including the 4 recipients of that slur, did anything but react with dignity & compassion.

@GeoRebekah @TenDesiderantes Thank you for saying so after reflection. I do wish that a larger part of the population in the states would also do so (I realise that here in the UK and particularly Scotland we’ve been aware of Robert and his campaigning for a long time and that USA has not)

@TenDesiderantes That was part of it. The other part, as I said, was being ignorant about the condition.

I was wrong about the tourettes outburst at BAFTA, and I'm sorry for rushing to judgment. We were all mislead - the BBC edited out every other outburst during the program except that one. They created a situation that appeared singular and targeted. I do not diminish the impact those words had in any way, and both the men who were presenting deserve an explanation. But I will not ask someone to apologize for a disability. We got this one wrong, guys.

@GeoRebekah Thanks for looking into it some more and admitting you could’ve thought more about it before reacting. Please look at the documentary of his life (via YouTube) and the film when you can (Amazon Prime currently in UK and I believe Netflix in the states soon).

@MargretGeraghty Fictitious feels safer unless there’s a particular reason to use real. I’ve used real places (Orkney, Minack Theatre in Cornwall, Rome) but the setting was integral to the stories and I knew the places well enough to feel confident in the detail.

Can I ask a question? My latest story is set on an island, and I'm trying to decide whether it's best to use a real island that I know, or invent a fictitious one based on the real island, so I don't have to worry about inaccuracies? Does it even matter?

@molamolabird @OslacsOdyssey @poppycravee Thanks for accepting you missed the part where the audience knew about his condition in advance (not to mention that the whole film, part of the awards, is all about HIM). You also missed the bit where you ought to have done some thorough research on Tourette’s before commenting.

@OslacsOdyssey @poppycravee hadn't seen that! thanks for sharing. it's good they were warned. i retract my earlier words, then. however i still think he could've apologised since it was a really racially charged slur. since he had already wrote a statement, i think it would've been nice to read an apology.

Biggest point of ‘I Swear’ inspired by John Davidson, that goes viral was this scene, for a reason. It's trying to normalize tourettes and explain to people that they can't control it. Forcing a person who has tourettes to apologize for every single thing is hell, shame on you.

@molamolabird @poppycravee That evening the BAFTA’s WAS his house. He was invited to celebrate a film about HIS life (which won x3 awards), the audience were pre-warned. He felt welcomed and safe until that mortifying moment out of his control when he removed himself. He is kind & helps so many people.

@poppycravee media literacy is going down the drain tbh, in the video the woman says, specifically: "IN THIS HOUSE". and then proceeds to say he can apologise go strangers. it's not like the bafta's was his house or his family where that rule had been set.

@CommonPerson50 @Polito_loco It won three awards last night, "I Swear" on Prime (coming soon on Netflix). There is also a documentary about John made back when he was 15. This will probably go down as one of the most bizarre tweets I've posted. John Davidson, a man that has battled tourettes syndrome most of his life. A condition that causes the person to have involuntary outburts of random words is now actually being cancelled because he had an involuntary reaction and said the N-word on TV. Fuckin' hell! I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend people watch the movie, I SWEAR. It is an incredible piece of cinema about John's life that saw him face bullying, corporal punishment, his family fall apart because of his condition but battle through it all and receive an MBE from the Queen. Honestly take a long hard look at yourself if you're giving him a hard time. PS, GFY!

Congratulations to I Swear actor Robert Aramayo, who won Best Actor at the Baftas. His performance in this amazing Scottish film is a must-see (coming to Netflix next month). He also won the Bafta rising star award 🎉

@ThompsonEirin @SJPfiction Thanks, Eirin, and sorry you experienced that. I used copious amounts of arnica gel and tried my best to rest it, and it is starting to feel a bit better (although the colour of the huge bruise looks even worse!!)

@Jacmor63 @SJPfiction Oh, Jackie! Hope your arm feels much better soon. I found that when I tried to get insurance cover, primarily in case injury to arms or hands rendered me unable to type, impossible as on an (endless) NHS waiting list for unrelated investigation.
