It is only societal insanity that has permitted them to proliferate, and elected leaders have only cowardice or corruption to blame for their failure to ban them.

@alex_burness It actually is a surprise to a lot of @coloradodems voters, because the governor pledged to support a ban on military style weapons, and in the wake of Parkland that was deciding factor for a lot of people.

No surprise Democrats in Colorado, who control state government, have killed a bill to ban so-called assault weapons. Capitol leadership has never prioritized it, Jared Polis clearly doesn’t want it, and few in the legislature have really pushed.

Assault weapons will be a dividing line in more Colorado Democratic primaries next year.

It wasn't even a total ban, it was a ban on sales and transfers of assault weapons. @coloradodems have a super majority in the house, and wouldn't even get it through committee. Anything to protect @GovofCO from being exposed as an opportunistic liar.

Racism is baked into our criminal legal system at every stage, from who is arrested and for what, to who is charged and for what, to who is imprisoned and for how long. Something Colorado legislators need to be reminded of as they continually seek to pass carceral bills.

White people in Colorado are more likely to be given deferred judgments -- have their cases dismissed if they comply with court-set criteria -- than Black people.

Black people in Colorado (who are arrested on drug charges at ⚡️12x⚡️ the rate of white people) receive less favorable plea deals. White people are more likely to have their drug charges reduced from felonies to misdemeanors, or from misdemeanors to petty offenses.
