MTN Mobile Money didn’t fail because the idea was bad. They were actively blocked. The CBN gave them a licence and revoked it a week later, and Nigerian bank CEOs behind the scenes threatened to cut off MTN’s distributors if the licence went through. And remember, MTN at that time already had the largest customer base in Nigeria, millions of users across every state. If anyone was positioned to dominate mobile money it was them.
OPay on the other hand came in with zero existing users. They quietly acquired Paycom Nigeria, a company that already held a dormant CBN licence, and that became their golden ticket bypassing years of regulatory red tape. Then they launched ORide and OBus not to be a transport company but purely to get millions of Nigerians to download their app. The transport business was just the bait, fintech was always the real plan. That was actually a smart move.
