Let this sink in: EACH MONTH since June 2023 was the planet's HOTTEST. This April was the hottest ON RECORD, and the 11th CONSECUTIVE month breaking HEAT records. The world is BOILING. How many more records need to be broken for world leaders to take MEANINGFUL CLIMATE ACTION?

What are you playing at @michaelgove ??? @AngelaRayner will your party make this simple pledge to save swifts if/when you come into power?

The Govt’s behaviour in relation to swifts has been distressing on numerous levels. The tiniest measure, one supported across the board - incl by the industry itself- could make the difference between survival and the disappearance of this iconic bird species in the UK. Michael Gove began the convo full of enthusiasm. He set @WriterHannahBT and me a challenge (to get the industry onside). We (or in reality she) did. And then Michael went silent and has refused to engage in any way since. I have cheerleaded for Michael for years as I felt he deserved much more praise as Environment Secretary than he received. But there isn’t a generous interpretation for his behaviour on this issue. He is a friend and it pains me to say it, but he has simply not been straight. So now the future of this iconic species rests in one man’s hands. His hands. And I fear he is willing to let them go. It is unforgivable. After all his work, will this sordid chapter be his legacy? I sincerely hope not but the signs are not good.
