On 15 August 1947, it declared independence and remained a sovereign state for more than seven and a half months, running its own administration and foreign contacts. The bulletin stated that the Khan of Kalat had been pressing India to accept Kalat’s accession, but that India (and Jawaharlal Nehru) would have nothing to do with it. The announcement spread rapidly and reached Kalat within hours. The impact was immediate. The ruler of Kalat, Mir Ahmad Yar Khan, suddenly found himself diplomatically isolated. With Pakistan already exerting pressure and the outside world hearing that India had refused him, his political room for manoeuvre collapsed. By the evening of 27 March 1948, the Khan decided to accede to Pakistan, bringing an abrupt end to Kalat’s brief period of independence and permanently altering the future of Balochistan. Kalat had ceased to exist as an independent state, and the map of South Asia had shifted once again — not by a battle or treaty, but by the power of a single radio broadcast heard across borders.
