@TBrown_birds Aw that's so cool! I peeked around 1am in Leamington but I didn't see anything. Lots of light pollution though.

The #Aurora was pretty amazing tonight, at least for a short time before I had to go to bed... 🤩 Goodnight and don't you dare get even better while I sleep 😑 #Auroraborealis #NorthernLights

@elora_grahame I can't think of a better group than owls but flycatchers (both old-world and new world) have a lot of variation in nest-type. New-world use all kinds of different niches and cups. Muscicapidae (old-world flycatchers) is a super diverse family with 59 genera so bound to have lots

Bird people, assemble! Which group of birds has the most representation of different nest types? (e.g. cup, cavities, scrape, platform) By "group" I mean phylogenetically related somehow. Bonus points if it's the same genus.

@TBrown_birds Terrible news. I'm so sorry for your loss, Taylor. I can assure you you're not a horrible scientist in fact you're one of the best I've ever met. Also the time it takes to complete a thesis has no correlation to the quality of the work.

My PhD feels like it will go on forever; similarly, I feel like I'm a horrible scientist who works too slowly, and that people in my field hate one of the only papers I've ever written. I feel like I will never have any sort of financial independence or security.

I'm not on here much anymore and this sort of tweet seems stupid, but sometimes saying things into the void feels therapeutic. My grandmother died this morning while I was stroking her hair and singing to her. I've lost three grandparents in two years. I've felt nothing but loss.

1/2 As we're gearing up for ✨YEAR 3✨ of the #ONBirdAtlas3, we have created an immersive way to explore the purpose of the Atlas. To showcase the importance of the data collected by the province’s birders, the Atlas team has created...(🥁Ruffed Grouse drumming in suspense🥁)...

@TheMacAran Many PhD programs are literally 5 years long. That aside, most people go over by at least a semester. Academics can become really corrupted by the need to publish such that the wellbeing of the student is not important. Students are becoming suicidal because of this.

@ChadWitko @4letterbird In high-school I would stare out the patio door while eating breakfast, and during migration that produced a bunch of good stuff including my lifer orange-crowned warbler. Not bad for a 10x20m urban garden isolated by miles of lawn and pavement. The trick: native plants.

Video description: a small reddish-brown shorebird is well hidden among the rocks on the beach and becomes visible as it scurries along. It turns small rocks over to look for food, and the rocks make a little clacking sound when it flips them over. 🥹

Ruddy Turnstones camouflage so well against beach rocks that I never see them until I’m practically standing on top of them! Sound on to hear this bird turning stones over to forage (very on brand). #shorebirds

@BigBirdMegan Eventually. First it blisters, then after about a month it heals. The skin on the back of my hands still seemed unusually sensitive to sunlight about a year later, but that may have been just my imagination.

@BigBirdMegan No, but wearing gloves protects the rash from the sun, and helps reduce itching. Calamine lotion helps the itch too but does not help get rid of the rash.

Y’all the lady @FairfieldHotels just called the police on me because I’ve been here for a week and they haven’t cleaned my room. I’ve asked everyday and they never came. I went to ask again and she said I was aggressive. Please pray I don’t die. Can anyone @MarriottBonvoy help 🥺

I'm not really the type to post personal things on SM, but I'm having a hard time right now. I am lucky to still have all 4 grandparents, but my grandma just had a heart attack and was in hospital, then finally came home and now my papa is in there and prob won't come home. 💔

Months ago, we Canadians thought we were better than the U.S. in our COVID situation and got kinda uppity about it (to be fair, Trump DID mishandle it and we felt lucky). Now we are feeling "vaccine envy" of you southern folks and I gotta admit I'm guilty as charged.
