It is truly a privilege to serve as General Secretary of the FDA and I could not be prouder to be re-elected for another 5 year term. The challenges never cease but neither does the inspiration in representing the dedicated public servants who make up our growing membership.

In case being fitted for your first pair of varifocals didn’t make you feel old enough, the opticians playing ‘The Music Sounds Better With You’ as it happens ought to do it.

@VicTaylorJones Have you tried telling her that they won’t be waging a culture war against the civil service?

Just to confirm, a two year old having a tantrum is still a two year old having a tantrum, even under a Labour government 🫠👌

The sooner the new govt can raise morale, reward work, attract talent and expertise, and signal to civil servants that they are valued, the more effective the CS will be at delivering across every single governmental priority. Why the new govt should not deprioritise CS pay 👇
FDA union@FDA_union

"If the PM is serious about quickly delivering change for the country, then he’d be well advised to tackle the issue of civil service pay head-on", writes @Lauren_Crowley for @CSWnews . civilserviceworld.com/professions/ar…

Some odd election stats. Gus O’Donnell only saw 2 changes of govt in his whole civil service career, yet this is my 7 yr old’s 3rd general election & if polls are right, tomorrow will bring her 5th Prime Minister. Also would be her 7th SoS for Education since she started school.

Civil servants know the challenges the public sector faces because they live with them every day. Whoever wins the election needs a civil service with the right resources, skills & motivation to help transform those services. My latest for ⁦@CSWnewscivilserviceworld.com/news/article/i…

The fun thing about this bad advert is you can see how it happens. Although Angela Rayner is popular among most voters, she is very unpopular among the five per cent of voters the Tory campaign is chasing. And if you poll 'should we have French-style labour laws', you get a No.

Angela Rayner’s Britain? 🇫🇷

Beyond devastated to hear my brilliant friend @Baznick56 has passed away. How we met is a great story. In halls at uni I met this guy, @LawrenceLinnell. He was tall and clever and fun. We became really good pals (who drank too much) and kept in touch a bit when we graduated.

@caitlinmoran Me too, I love taking my seven-year-old daughter so she can see how it works and why it matters, and how it can only happen because people freely give their time.

I love voting. Everyone turning up to do an important thing; lots of patient dogs; dusty school halls; a huge national machine kept in motion with tiny pencils.

Ministers can prioritise currying favour with whatever wing of the party they feel they need to ingratiate themselves with, or they can lead the civil service, they can’t do both. It appears John Glen has chosen the former. My latest for @CSWnews: civilserviceworld.com/news/article/d…

It’s extraordinary, in a city where hybrid working’s evident across the private sector, we still get the accusation that this is a public sector phenomenon. Trashing the brand for cheap headlines & limiting flexible working isn’t going to attract the talent they say they want to.
Standard News@standardnews

Civil servants still “languishing in lockdown habits” of working from home have been told to “get back to the office” #frontpage Cabinet Office minister John Glen has stressed that working from home should be the “exception and not the rule”. Read: standard.co.uk/news/politics/…

The brass neck of Truss, blaming everyone for her own failings. Career civil servants will spend most of their working lives serving Conservative govts. When exactly were they captured by “left wing ideology”? What exactly did they stop you from doing? Trashing the economy?
Natasha Clark@NatashaC

NEW: @IainDale speaks with @trussliz in a *very* explosive chat tonight from 7pm @LBC - It "has to be" Donald Trump to win the White House "I don't think Biden has been particularly supportive to the UK, I would like to see a new President" - Calls for BoE governor Andrew Bailey to be SACKED for pushing her to u-turn over her mini budget/monetary policy "There should be proper investigation into what happened in September 2022, the actions the BoE took. Big mistakes have been made with monetary policy... is that really democratic?" - Repeatedly refuses to rule out running for the leadership again - Says there's too much activism in the civil service, the state has become more left wing - there are too many quangos making the life of a PM difficult "All the regulators have had mission creep... the civil service have become less accountable, there is more activism than there was in the past. I don't think 40 years ago you would see civil servants being so political active, the state has become more left wing, there has been more capture by left wing ideology" - Implies the government's commitment to reaching net zero and associated strategy is "economic suicide" - Suggests her Conservative colleagues who pushed for gender self-ID were trying to be "fashionable"

The real fun in this is imagining the conversation about whether to have the men's team or women's team in the image. 'But the women did actually win something,' 'yes, but will it look too woke?' Tough gig.

To blame civil servants for the outcomes of their own poor political choices shows a weakness not only in the policy, but in the ministers themselves. My latest opinion piece for @guardianopinion on the Rwanda debacle: theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
