This is a MUST-READ. @williamalden spent extensive time with Monarchists to better understand their perspective and their philosophy. Ironically, in that effort, he ended up being threatened by them and accused of being an agent of the Islamic Republic. nybooks.com/online/2026/04…

Fuel prices in Europe typically range from €1.3 to €2.3 per liter; but here’s the key point: about half of that price is tax collected in the buyer country (European governments). For example, if petrol costs €1.8/L: 🔹 ~€0.5–0.6 = crude oil (paid to producing countries) 🔹 ~€0.3–0.4 = refining, transport, margins 🔹 ~€0.8–0.9 = taxes collected domestically in the purchasing country That means only 25–35% of the final price goes to oil-producing countries, while 50% or more goes directly to governments in the countries buying the fuel (excise + VAT). Bottom line: European governments collect about €0.8–1 per liter in taxes, often more than the value of the oil itself and these taxes are imposed and retained within the buyer countries, not paid to producers. What’s striking is that European governments could reduce fuel prices and the inflation they often blame on war or the Strait of Hormuz, simply by lowering these taxes and their own revenues. But they chose otherwise. Iranians are paying the price in blood for the revenues of European governments. #IranMassacre #KingRezaPahlavi
