Why it doesn’t make sense for poker tournaments to be taxed: Collectively, the only revenue being generated is by the house. They win, but collectively there is no income for players. Example: 100 players put up $1000 and an extra $100 for the house. 15 of those 100 players will show a profit that day, but the sum total of the 100 players is a loss. If winners and losers all filed their taxes appropriately for that event, the government earns nothing from the players and is just buried in unnecessary paperwork. The house earning revenue should pay their fair share of taxes, of course, but taxing a group of people that are net losing money isn’t right. If you are taxing the house and the winning players, you are just double dipping.
