Community Message from Supervisor Jeff Gorell Ventura County, District 2 This week’s federal immigration enforcement action at an agricultural site in unincorporated Camarillo has had a significant and painful impact on families across our community. Ventura County has now found itself at the center of a national issue—one that continues to stir fear, confusion, and hardship for many of our neighbors. This federal operation, and other recent ICE actions, have created impacts to some families and children with food, rent and other basic needs. In response, I am working to launch a Community Relief Fund. I've made a personal pledge of $5,000. The fund will provide direct assistance for essentials to those families in crisis. Next week, I will be joining trusted partners, organizations, and community leaders to share more details about the fund and how others can get involved and help support impacted families. To be clear, this week’s action, and other recent operations, were initiated and executed solely by federal agencies. According to Sheriff Jim Fryhoff, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office was not involved in the planning or execution of the immigration enforcement operation, and only responded after federal agents requested assistance due to escalating violence. Protestors blocked exits, and in one alarming instance, an individual allegedly fired a handgun toward agents. The Sheriff’s Tactical Response Team was dispatched to ensure public safety and de-escalate a volatile situation. Deputies used no force and withdrew after the scene was secured. “The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office does not participate in immigration raids,” said Sheriff Fryhoff. “Our role is to restore peace and protect lives when violence breaks out.” The Ventura County Fire Department was also dispatched through the 911 system and responded only to provide emergency medical aid. Fire personnel were not involved in any enforcement action. “Our commitment is to the safety of all members of our community,” VCFD stated. “We provide professional, compassionate emergency care regardless of immigration status. We do not ask, record, or report that information.” The safety of our community is—and always will be—a top priority. I am especially concerned about any violence toward anyone, and how this type of activity puts our local first responders and community members in danger. No one—whether a resident, a worker, or a public servant—should be placed in harm’s way. If you have any information about the reported gunfire or the presence of an active shooter at the scene, please contact the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office immediately. This incident highlights a larger concern. I am once again urging the Federal Administration to focus immigration enforcement efforts on violent offenders and repeat criminals—not on farmworkers and families who are part of the fabric of our communities.
