Lowkey, there was never really a musical comparison. The rivalry just made it look close.
The moment Davido fans stopped using music achievements for banter and switched to talking about cars, private jets, wealth and “connections,” everybody already knew the music conversation was slipping away.
Wizkid is sitting on over 11 billion streams while Davido is still around 3 billion. One Dance alone has numbers that can stand beside an entire catalogue.
Then Essence happened and completely changed the global perception of Afrobeats. Grammy nominations, Billboard success, international charts, sold out arenas, breaking into markets African artists struggled to enter before… Made In Lagos became a cultural moment, not just an album.
And the craziest part is that Wizkid’s influence on Davido was obvious from the beginning. A whole generation copied the sound, the melodies, the calm superstar approach and the international vision.
Davido used the comparison perfectly for visibility and it helped elevate his brand, but musically Wizkid has always felt like the level everybody else was chasing.
