I remember when I went to the UK to renew my US visa. Everything was fine until I was about to come back to the US and they told me I couldn’t fly because I didn’t have one particular document. Ah. Everything just went blur 😂 I was automatically stranded. I was just a broke PhD student in a foreign country wondering what exactly was going on. If I stayed back in the UK, it would take like 6 months to get the document, and I wasn’t even eligible because I was just a visitor. Going back to Nigeria was an option, but that one too meant staying back for like 6 months. Which means… losing a whole semester of my PhD because I had to take physical classes. Chai. Thank God for my dad because he called his friend from secondary school. I went to stay with his family because honestly, spending extra money was not even an option, and I didn’t even know how long I was going to be in the UK. I had to call my school to explain, and they allowed me teach online for the first week at least, pending when I could figure out my life. I went into search mode. I was on different websites all night, reading everything. Then I saw it. An exemption. Some countries didn’t need that document… and Nigeria was there. I was so happy. Safe to say my Nigerian passport saved me. The next day, I went back to the airport. They still didn’t allow me to fly. I said I wanted to speak to the manager. I brought out the rule from my phone, showed her, and we read it together, line by line. That was how she now said I could fly ooo 😭 That one day, I had already started thinking about my life differently. Next thing, I was back in the US and resumed school like nothing even happened. Meanwhile, the reason I even went to the UK was because Canada gave me an appointment like two years later 😭 so I couldn’t renew my visa in Canada. What stood out for me? Relationships. People always wonder how I keep in touch with friends from way back, even primary school. I genuinely enjoy it. In that moment, my dad’s friend from secondary school came through for me.
