My birthmom was raped. That is how I was conceived. She was young, not quite 16. Family demanded she abort me, and offered to pay. She said no. During an ultrasound, doctors saw I would be special needs. I was diagnosed with hydrocephalus. The only thing that changed was she sought out a family who would want a special needs baby. My parents were qualified and willing to raise a child with special needs. Of course, when I was born there was no sign of hydrocephalus, but that's a story for another time. Special needs babies deserve life. They deserve love, care, and life.

A man ended his unborn son this week because the boy had Down syndrome. Thousands of strangers called him brave. There is nothing new under the sun. Rome left its weak infants on the hill to die while rich women carried pampered lapdogs through the streets. We did not get kinder. We just moved the hill onto a screen and added applause. I wrote about it today. About that, and about my grandson Blake. Sixteen pounds, just off oxygen, and the reason three generations of my family are stronger than they have ever been. This is Millie. She’s a beautiful little girl with an extra chromosome. If not for abortion, an estimated 4,700 more people like Millie would be born every year. And the families who know and love people with Down syndrome overwhelmingly describe them as a gift: 90% of families with a Down syndrome child say their child has enriched their lives. 94% of siblings express gratitude for their Down syndrome sibling. 99% of those with Down syndrome say they are happy with their lives. Every life is precious.
