It'll be difficult as they don't have much contract flexibility or picks to pivot, but if the Leafs hire Sunny Mehta and change the coach, they could absolutely be a contender next year.

@LeafsinJune It was one of the weaker draft years in the modern era; certainly no generational stars available. But many had far better stats than Stefan, indicating hope they'd be good. The Sedins, (2&3) had great careers & Henrik Zetterberg wound up being the biggest steal at 210th overall.

What prompted the Atlanta Thrashers to think Patrik Stefan was remotely close to being good enough to be taken 1st overall in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft? Couldn't have been stats. Arguably the worst top pick in NHL Draft history. At least Daigle and Yakupov had good junior numbers.

Stefan was obviously good enough to play in the NHL, as a 3rd-liner, but he was never going to reach the potential of a 1st overall draft pick. It's wasted picks like that as to why the Thrashers were so awful under GM Don Waddell.

@TLNdc If retool incl. moving Mo, Carlo, Benoit + adding 2 top pair D, trading 1 of the goalies, adding a 2C, 1 RW, 2 LW +moving on from Lorentz, Jarnkrok, Macelli, Joshua, and taking chances on Danford, Groulx and Quillan full time rather than adding aging depth, then retool it is!

@domluszczyszyn They have stars, but they've never lead with sacrifice and will. I like 88/34, but until depth gap is closed with talented character guys, it will be same story. Add every Paccioretty, Thornton, Joshua, Domi. Simmonds out there. But until you get more Knies types, they wont win.

@LeafsPapi_ Many disagree, but i also think the JT signing was needless. Hes a good player, good role model, but not the type of player Dubas needed to sign based on his personality and position.

Leafs are trying to find the next Dubas. We hired him as a rookie GM. Of course he made mistakes and he also learned from them. He gave out big contracts to the ‘core 4’ PRE-PANDEMIC. Cap was supposed to go up, it didn’t. Now we experienced the boomer, grit>skill GM. We have big D men that can’t move the puck. Leafs are missing playoffs for the first time in 9 years and don’t have a 1st round pick. Neither worked but I choose Dubas in a heartbeat.

@coreylandsberg The big fix is culture. Until you get more guys who are dogs AND have talent (53 + 23 are a start) that can outnumber 34, 88, 91, culture wont change. True top 6 guys have to come in and show you play like us and we win. New coach takes mins from stars if they refuse to buy in.

The best teams have a pro scouting dept that finds gems on other teams. Almost every player on the Panthers came from elsewhere other than Barkov & Ekblad. The best the Leafs could do was Maccelli & Joshua. Thats the most important thing for the new GM to overhaul #LeafsForever

Thoughts on Pelley presser: 1) they still don’t have a vision. No firm hired, no hierarchy determined. Doesn’t mean they won’t get this right, but they’re winging it right now. 2) Pelley just told the prospective GM’s he doesn’t want to hear about scorched earth rebuild.

If Max Domi survives this off-season, he should be deployed like Jason Spezza was and fight more - I might even become a fan if he did some fun stuff offensively and physically on L4 He can't seriously be deployed as a Top 9 fixture if the team is going to be good.
