The National Liberation Movement (NLM) was formed in Kumasi on September 19, 1954, as a major opposition force against Kwame Nkrumah’s CPP, advocating for federalism, regional autonomy, and the protection of traditional authority. Led by Baffour Osei Akoto, with key figures such as Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia, J.B. Danquah, Joe Appiah, I.B. Asafu-Adjaye, and Victor Owusu, the movement became a powerful voice against centralized governance. Composed largely of Ashanti traditional leaders and former CPP members, the NLM played a significant role in Ghana’s political evolution before later merging into the United Party after independence.
