This is the most straightforward example of environmental, economic, and cultural vandalism this govt has yet proposed, and there is no shortage of candidates
And in addition, it will destroy the govt's moral authority to enforce any other fishing laws

@EricCrampton It's complicated, but yes, it COULD be part of a coherent least-regret system, but the important elements of such a system do not exist or are laughably undercooked; ie refusal to enforce monitoring or meaningful penalties for breaches even in rare cases where they are detected
English
@LewSOS Sure. Just that the size limit part could be part of coherent and conservation-consistent policy: no dumping, cameras, land everything, discourage catching smalls by charging quota as though they were full size (they may already do that last part?).
English

@EricCrampton It's basically just an amnesty for an industry that has always, since the beginning of time, operated illegally to the extent that the sea is big and the govt is far away and where there's no observed harm, there's no foul
English

@EricCrampton The intended purpose is largely to allow commercial fishers to just be honest about the rules they already break (because govt refuses to enforce/require observers &c)
But biomass going back into the sea with a low survival rate is still better than making strip-mining the norm

@StuMorrisonNZ It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it

@LewSOS Yes one of us looks at cause and effect, while the other only looks at effect.

This is obviously why the cultural system based on Genghis Khan's moral philosopy, life, and teachings has gone on to dominate the world, right
While the cultural system based on the moral philosophy, life, and teachings of Jesus is largely a quaint nostalgic affectation

NOW - Netanyahu: "Jesus Christ has no advantage over Genghis Khan. Because if you are strong enough, ruthless enough, powerful enough, evil will overcome good."

@MarkStewartNZ This is just argument #4371 in which we go around in circles because we operate from different conceptions of reality and different evidentiary inputs
English

@LewSOS That is just an ill informed reckon.
Israel provides significant aid and help, but is also hamstrung by the actions of Hamas who use aid as a weapon, use leniency as a weapon and take advantage of any relaxation of restrictions to inflict death on Israeli's.

@MarkStewartNZ The problem is not that Israel defends itself
It's that its leaders believe their righteousness exempts them from international humanitarian law and the other obligations that derive from the liberty they claim as their basis for existence
And in doing so they become Khanlike
English

@LewSOS People without preconceived ideas might have wondered if they were being played when mass protests erupted out of nowhere on October 7th and 8th 2023 as Hamas were on their murderous rampage, before Israel had responded at all, accusing Israel of genocide
English

@MarkStewartNZ Israel could possibly have avoided most of that by simply not murdering so many children, bombing so many hospitals, permitting so many illegal settlers to run amok, starving so many refugees with blockades on food & medical supplies, &c &c but here the fuck we are
English

@LewSOS Israel's actions in a vacuum and judge without the proper context is both disturbing and unfortunately not surprising.
English

@MarkStewartNZ The thing that Netanyahu takes issue with is that so many of the righteous are indeed standing up against the idea that the will to power confers the right to enforce cultural domination -- and they're standing up to his regime and its will to dominate its occupied possessions
English

@MarkStewartNZ You might have heard of it. In its modern form it comes as a package with fraternity and equality (only not so much within Israel these days)
English

@MarkStewartNZ Yes I did watch it. But the premise is bullshit, because Genghis Khanism has proven much weaker than any of that implies, and not just recently, but for most of the past 500 years
And that's before you even get into the nonsense of Netanyahu claiming to be the paragon of good
English

@LewSOS Netanyahu was quoting Durant, and calls it an UNFORTUNATE conclusion about how evil has overcome good throughout history because good has not been "strong enough". In fact, it contexualises the statement that democracy must re-assert its will to defend itself
English

@southstarbrew Not even a should, really. Nothing special about a Ranger, it's just a replacement-value modern ute produced in huge quantities globally due to high demand
English

This is not remotely true
Nick Young@nickofnz
It’s now socially unacceptable to drive a Ford Ranger.

Iranians have risen up countless times, and have always been met with repression and bullets.
They most recently rose up in Dec. 2025 - Jan 2026 when the regime massacred thousands of protesters, and hanged 3 protesters this morning.
Are you ok? Shouldn’t you know this?
