It’s embarrassing that Sony spent all this time chasing a Fortnite. That window closed long before their live service initiative started.
The real opening was taking the gameplay/presentation of their singleplayer games and adding a multiplayer spin i.e Factions, Legends etc.

Sony will never say it publicly but their goal is to create just one live service game as close as possible to the popularity of Fortnite. NEWSFLASH: It’s never gonna happen. They intentionally keep AAA single player games to the bare minimum on purpose. They make as many as they feel necessary to keep the fan base on board while rooting for one of their live service games to take off. Sony with all due respect you suck at live service and it’s not what we want. You’re digging your own grave. Rethink what you’re doing. Flip your focus back to single player experiences.

We set a goal for Age of Empire 3. The goal was for us, an RTS company, to win Best Graphics at E3. This prize always went to first persons shooters, but we set our caps and pulled out all the stops.
We had buildings that splintered and shattered when struck by cannonballs. We had flaming arrows fired into thatched roofs and wooden walls. We had clouds of gunsmoke belching over the field. We have waves and reflections in the sea. Parrots flew overhead.
And you know what?
We won. Our artists felt like cock of the walk, and were insufferable for week. The programmers also took their sizable share of the credit. Only we designers stayed humble - our job was to make it fun, not to look pretty. But we were proud too.
