We are delighted to announce that Dr  Debora Nyirenda prestigious @wellcometrust Career Development Award. Her fellowship will advance innovative social science research focused on understanding how communities experience and respond to the health impacts of climate change.

New funding for infectious disease clinical trials! 📣  We’re funding randomised controlled trials to optimise existing vaccines and therapeutics for infectious diseases. This research must be led by those closest to the challenge. The lead applicant must be based in a low- or middle-income country in Africa, South Asia, or South-East Asia. Trials should focus on one of the following disease areas: • mycobacterial infections (tuberculosis, leprosy or infections with non-tuberculous mycobacteria) • bacterial infections (sexually transmitted infections, lower respiratory tract infections or bloodstream infections) • invasive fungal infections • dengue, leishmaniasis or schistosomiasis If you have an innovative idea for a randomised controlled trial proposal, but need to build your team, develop your clinical trial protocol or generate pilot data, you can apply to our Infectious Disease Clinical Trial Development Award. The training follows a similar program recently conducted for healthcare workers, including nurses and doctors, focusing on hand hygiene and infection control procedures relevant to their roles.

This initiative aims to equip these essential staff members with the necessary skills for proper surface cleaning and hygiene practices to help prevent the spread of infections within the hospital environment.

Today, Thursday 15th May 2025, our Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Implementation Team is conducting a training session for support staff (cleaners, hospital attendants and security personnel) at Zomba Central Hospital.

Being facilitated by our IPC implement Study team, the presentations are being punctuated by reviews on the alternative steps commonly used when resources are limited. These alternatives are being evaluated in light of the potential infection risks they may pose.

These presentations have sparked discussions around the challenges faced by health workers at Zomba Central Hospital in adhering to gold standard procedures for urinary catheterisation and intravenous cannulation.

Day 3 Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) training sessions for Zomba Central Hospital (ZCH) health workers have kicked off with presentations on best practices for urinary catheterisation and intravenous cannulation.

These hands-on lessons aim to help health workers identify gaps in their daily practices, especially around hand hygiene and reinforce the correct steps to follow when performing various procedures in the ward. #researchdrivinghealth.

It’s an engaging and insightful afternoon as IPC training for Zomba-based health workers continues! The team has now moved into practical sessions, covering essential procedures such as hand hygiene, wound dressing, urinary catheterisation and intravenous cannulation.

This lapse increases the risk of patients contracting healthcare-associated infections (HAIs)infections acquired while receiving treatment in hospital. Meanwhile, participants pointed out a lack of resources as a key barrier to consistently practicing proper hand hygiene.

Zgambo says during the study’s formative phase, it was observed that some health workers occasionally neglect standard hand hygiene protocols during catheter insertion or removal.

Day 2 of the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) training for health workers has started on a high note.
