@LJRyder16 @GeeTheExplorer You only got the tone of the response that you did because of how YOU sought to shame with your reply first! [See: "Maybe it's YOU that's the problem" and "Whatever is happening in teacher training ffs"] Now you've come back with sarcasm, over-generalisation, and exaggeration.

@GeeTheExplorer A teacher really shouldn't be seeking to 'shame' it's not a learning vibe is it? There is a major problem with exam conveyor belts that make learning a joyless boring thing I know too many kids of this age who are really bright but can't wait to get away from school/teachers

Sent out an anonymous survey to my year 11. I asked what I could do to help them in their last few months before exams... they've all put "revision" ... 4 come to lunchtime sessions, and I've put revision material on Teams. When will students take accountability for themselves?

@TheMathsBazaar Really glad it’s not just me 😅 I just find it baffling that I don’t get them on my main account! 🤷🏼 I suppose the Government is going to have to fill all these maths teacher vacancies *somehow*…

This is getting ridiculous. I’m being persistently followed by more and more AI bots on this account.. are they following other maths teachers? Or do AI bots love chinchillas?

Can anyone explain why, when I first started teaching… say 15 years ago kids were better at computers than I was, in terms of use of creating a PowerPoint or word document and using hardware. Now… they can barely turn a computer on? #computing #ICT

@DrDavidBoyce @hartmaths That’s interesting. I’m not convinced I believe that *anything* is a cognitive dead end! I advocated for keeping the method, but it would definitely be circumstance-specific for me, rather than always!

@hartmaths My action research shows that pupils taught this method can’t progress past it. The evidence is out there - formula triangles are a cognitive dead end.

Picked up a new Y11 class this year and it’s taking a lot of work trying to get them off using formula triangles…

On a hundred square, can we be sure only primes remain after removing the multiples of 2, 3, 5, and 7? Ignoring the pesky one of course... mathsbot.com/activities/sie…

@missradders @hartmaths Yep I agree, and that’s why I choose to teach students the relationship between the triangle, the formulae AND the units of measure in these cases. In an exam they can work out what the triangle looks like! I tutor 1:1 for a school now, so I don’t get much choice on methods!

@MathsCave @hartmaths It's the triangle being misremembered that's the problem - I see it so much on kids exam papers when I'm marking each summer. They clearly have no concept of what speed is as they've been taught to just learn (or not!) a triangle.

@harden19971 @Gary_Johnston @hartmaths There’s no reason a formula triangle would be any different to using a formula written out, surely? You always need consistent units, i.e. your units of distance and time determine your unit of speed and vice-versa

@missradders @hartmaths 🤭 I hadn’t actually looked in enough detail.. 🫣 To be fair, my suggestions above *do* help to get the formula triangles right and know why they’re right. I don’t think the triangles can take the blame for the kid adding two speeds at the end though… 🫨

@markhiggins20 @Sue_Cowley To speak generically is to generalise from the specific. So by definition includes specific cases. These people are, in fact, talking *hypothetically* about what they *think* kids should do in their ideal world.

Just seen a tweet wanting to know why kids don't just get the bus or walk to school and well yeah they cancelled the once a day bus through our village a couple of years ago and there are no pavements between here and school. 🤷‍♀️

I don’t understand why I am being repeatedly followed by loads of AI bots on *this* account. Are maths teachers a prime target for that kind of thing these days? 🤔

@chris_emerson @benjamindickman @sonukg4india Your further clarification of the comment is noted. The problem with this type of puzzles, the originator of the post doesn’t specify the rules thus keeping many interpretations open. One of the rules; tilting or rotating the image is not allowed. 👇

Anyone excited enough to spend some of their evening answering some questions on quartiles, percentiles and interpolation for me? What an opportunity.

@missradders @El_Timbre @TheMathsBazaar I wonder whether this was deliberate 🤔 Don’t get me wrong, it’s a really bad idea if so - but I wonder if someone *thought* (wrongly) they were creating a more accessible and open-ended problem that has multiple solutions by taking out one of the shapes as a limiting variable?
