Ideas have consequences. Abandoning the concept of marriage as a conjugal partnership and redefining marriage as a form of sexual-romantic companionship or domestic partnership had consequences. They were predictable--and predicted. encounterbooks.com/books/what-is-…

"The activist organizations I once revered now champion causes that lend credence to the right-wing claim that gay marriage was the slippery slope toward the erosion of traditional social and moral values." 🔗👇

Philosopher Kathleen Stock on abortion in Britain: "You can’t mention the most obvious ethical difficulty: hundreds and thousands of deaths." Boom. Dr. Stock's plainspokenness and sheer integrity put most academics to shame.
Kathleen Stock@Docstockk

Reupping this piece of mine on attempt to decriminalise late-term abortion. The combination of pills-by-post plus removal of deterrent spells disaster (if you take deaths of babies as disaster, and I do). I hope the Lords support @MoncktonR's amendment. unherd.com/2025/11/what-p…

What wonderful news! The Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy has conferred its annual Joseph Story Award on Professor J. Joel Alicea of the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America. Joel was an undergraduate at Princeton, where he was one of my star students. He went on to Harvard Law School and a clerkship at the Supreme Court of the United States. He has become a leading theorist of originalism in constitutional interpretation. This is an inspired selection. I am so delighted!

@jacklgoldsmith Adrian is right on the mark here, in my opinion, Jack. The vulgar rhetoric is not justified. And it's not simply a matter of politesse (or "civility" in the degraded sense of that term that essentially reduces it to mere politessee).

The eminent German political philosopher Jurgen Habermas has died at age 96. He was a towering figure of the post-WW II era during which liberal secularism was dominant in his field. He played a role in continental European intellectual life that was analogous to the role played by the late John Rawls in the U.S. and more broadly in the Anglosphere. Habermas lived into an era during which confidence in the liberal secularism he and Rawls championed has significantly eroded. He himself was by no means insensible to this erosion. In fact, to his credit, he acknowledged the force of the criticisms marshaled against liberal secularism during the period of its ascendancy, and in recent decades he looked for opportunities to engage with secularism's deepest critics, including his countryman Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI). And, despite the persistence of his unbelief, he did not hesitate to note the role Christianity had played in forging and advancing values he himself shared. He was by no means a Christopher Hitchens-type "new atheist." On the contrary, he was, to quote Don Corleone, "a serious man." Requiescat in pace.

For all the talk of sexual difference on the Right, it’s baffling to me that some seem naive to the most salient of differences: that most men could kill most women with their bare hands. The corollary to this is that aggressive and demeaning rhetoric about/toward women actually scares women… *because* they are more vulnerable than men. I personally don’t know a single conservative man who would raise a hand against a woman, or demean himself by speaking about women as some of these younger men do. (Indeed, my experience with faithful conservative men is what attracted me to both faith and conservatism in the first place.) But the conservative men I know - who are yes, gentle-men - know well their own capacity for violence. And this, I think, makes them grateful for the perennial tradition of the West which taught for centuries that liberal/moral education and habituation would help to moderate and channel men’s characteristic spiritedness for the common good, for the good of women and children alike. Call me old-fashioned but I pine for the public voice of these gentlemen, many of whom heroically do the work of human formation in their private and professional lives - because they know that that’s where genuine formation takes place, certainly not by opining via anon accounts on X.
Helen Andrews@herandrews

Mostly this piece is boring and predictable but I will say that “Don’t publicly trash your old side unless you’re willing to put your name next to it” is one of those honor-based rules of open conflict that feminized societies just don’t get, so thanks for illustrating the point.
