20 years as a varsity coach taught me 10 things about building winners. #7 is the hardest one for coaches👇 1. Culture is built in the moments you think don’t matter. 2. Your best player sets the standard, or destroys it. 3. Discipline is a form of love. 4. The locker room tells you everything about your real culture. 5. The coach-player relationship is the foundation of everything. Build it first. 6. Players don’t remember plays. They remember how you made them feel. 7. The hardest thing to coach: getting players to want what the team needs more than what they want. 8. It’s not just what you say. It’s how you say it, who you say it to, and when. 9. Getting players to own their role, not just accept it, is rare. 10. The coach who wins long-term builds people, not just players. 20 years. 500+ games. This is what actually matters. 🏆

April 18, 1976: With 17 seconds left in overtime of a series-deciding playoff game in Philadelphia, a fan is ejected for shaking the basket during a free throw attempt by Buffalo’s Bob McAdoo. McAdoo (34 PTS/22 REB) made the free throw and the Braves defeated the 76ers, 124-123.

Coaching is about relationships. 🔥 Gregg Popovich said it best: “Wins and losses fade. Relationships stick with you forever.”

Dan Hurley shares why his players accept hard coaching and it comes down to one thing. "You invest every second that you can in them. On the court and off the court. You just pour everything you have into them. Your family is intertwined with your program." "I think players sense that. They feel that." Then he explained why his players accept being pushed: "My players will accept the hard coaching from me and our staff because they know how much we love them." "They know how much we're trying to prepare them, toughen them up, teach them, help them grow as men, develop new skills quickly - all those things that are gonna add value to their lives." People know when you invest and you care. "We're relentless for them. We're literally giving everything we got to them while they're on campus." The formula: Invest and care first then balance that with pushing them forward. Then he got honest: "I wouldn't wanna play for me for 10 years. I wouldn't wanna play for this staff for 8, 10, 12, 15 years. We go hard for these guys while they're on campus and that's why you see the bond the way it is." The window may be short, but the impact lasts forever. Players don't accept hard coaching because you demand it. They accept it because they know you love them. (🎥 March Madness)

Nebraska putting 4 players on the court. Duke’s last 10 seconds up 2. Florida helping and giving up the 3. Just a reminder the next time you’re at a high school game: mental mistakes happen at EVERY level. And screaming at 15-18 year olds from the stands isn’t changing that.

Everybody wants discipline… until discipline gets loud.
Everybody wants toughness… until toughness gets uncomfortable. Hard coaching isn’t abuse.
Hard coaching is correction.
Hard coaching is standards.
Hard coaching is loving a kid enough not to let him stay average. If a coach is demanding effort, detail, toughness, and accountability bothers you… that probably says more about today’s culture than it does the coach.

@BenGoessling Agree. I wish him the best cause he’s worked so hard and has been doubted often. He has a tough mind and will, and that alone will get him far in life with or without bball. But man, I don’t get it - he guarded bigger guys last night, was academic all state and carried his team

@MinnTakeoff From what I heard, there’s been some more D2 interest lately (which will probably grow after this tournament), but I don’t believe it’s been huge. And yes, the process of promoting yourself and building relationships with colleges has totally changed in this world.
