@MaureenCof30988 @Heccles94 @parkrunUK Couldn't care less in Parkrun, because it's not a race. It's not competitive. It's a volunteer-run event for fitness and fun. I only care about my own time. Actual elite athletes are taking part in higher-stakes events than Parkrun.

Hey @parkrunUK - The vast majority of us out here who are not transphobic will happily chip in to help your legal fees if the Transphobic Mob attempt to sue. Keep up the great work bringing communities together and getting people active!

@Map_Addict Used to do this sort of thing all the time in India, successfully, and in the last scheme of work I planned I had students do a project on the geography of the Tour de France using ArcGIS and storymaps. But sure, the only effective teaching method is direct instruction.

@SteveReich Such a phenomenal piece of music. It's utterly mesmerising, and the musicianship required to play it is second to none. I know what I'm listening to on my drive home this evening!

@calciopundit @jordanbhx @AaronBastani It really isn't. They (cars I'm assuming) require more energy per person to move (especially for single occupancy cars) and take up more space than other forms of transport, especially when you factor in all the associated instructure with cars (e.g. car parks).

The image on the left is a real place. One of the most pernicious things repeated in some quarters is that what buildings look like doesn't matter, only urbanism. Here's the same urbanism. One is dystopian and soul crushingly ugly. The other would be a nice place to live.

@KeruboSk Once. I did some reception work at a dentist and a lady came in. Brought her details up on screen and she was born in 1898! She would have been about 104. I had so many questions I wanted to ask.

Just out of curiosity… who out there has actually talked to someone born in the 1800s during their lifetime?

@worstall @createstreets Compared to cars (ICE or EV), they are much quieter, and the sound isn't persistent unlike a constant stream of traffic. We've got more tools nowadays to reduce the noise from trams, which lots of cities are implementing.

It's time for trams ! Why is Britain not taking part in the tram revolution? It's because we're shooting ourselves in both feet with a machine gun. The European average cost per mile of tramway is £42mn. Average British cost is more than twice as high at £87mn. Why.... ?
Simon Paul Felton@Feltip1982

Various tram routes from Spain: Bilbao, Victoria-Gasteiz and Barcelona. Barcelona Diagonal extension with third rail (activated only when tram over it) to be catenary free. Using routes as suds and green routes. Exciting to see what can be done noting challenges @createstreets

@worstall @createstreets EVs still create lots of noise - noise pollution is bad for our health. They still pollute waterways with rubber. They still crash into people. They still take up lots of physical space, including associated infrastructure like parking. I'm not anti-car, just pro- good design.

@MrLGeo @createstreets EVs shuttling people door to door is not a threat to health. Unlike trams, as anyone who has read Decline and Fall will be able to tell you.

@createstreets We had trams and scrapped them because they were inefficient, inflexible and bloody expensive. Buses are better.

@createstreets No idea what the Manchester trams cost to build but they’ve revolutionised the city. Worth every penny long term. New routes being added and extended has opened everything up.

@createstreets Building out trams as truly autonomous cars and taxis are right around the corner is a massive, lunatic, waste of money. So there is that.

@Chroniqueur1Ku @TerribleMaps It's amazing - all on YouTube and surprisingly sophisticated. I watched my videos of it all the time as a kid, and since doing a biology degree (and teaching biology), I realised just quite how in depth it is. The way it teaches protein synthesis, for example.

If you're not using mini-whiteboards, then what are you using? I've been reflecting this holiday on formative assessment, and considering the most effective ways to monitor for learner understanding as we teach. And for me, it always comes back to the use of mini-whiteboards; whether these are for closed, single answer questions, multiple-choice questions, processes, or anything else. Mini-whiteboards allow for instant evaluation of student thinking, misconception identification and determination of next steps. They allow for high participation (all learners should engage) and deep thinking (if we pose appropriate questions). Is there anything as powerful as effective use of mini-whiteboards?
