ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER is a fantastic theatrical experience, featuring some of my favorite performances of the year. It stirred emotions so strong I found myself clenching my fist at times, all balanced with perfectly timed humor and levity. Plus, it looks incredible in IMAX!

ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER is the film of our time. Bracingly exhilarating, politically charged, heartfelt and funny as hell, it may be the most important film Paul Thomas Anderson has ever made, certainly his most urgent and relevant. The whole cast delivers with DiCaprio at his best when he deploys both his comedic and dramatic chops and he gets to do just that here; Sean Penn is the best he’s been in years with an unsettling performance of rage, hatred and deep insecurity under a facade of toxic bravado; Teyana Taylor makes an unforgettable impression; and Chase Infiniti announces to the world that she’s a new star. At over two and a half hours, PTA’s latest races by driven by propulsive editing and a Jonny Greenwood score that shifts between idiosyncratic playfulness and operatic grandeur. It’s one cinematic delight after another, adding up to what is, in my mind so far, the best film of the year.

Please fire Henry Braham and hire a new cinematographer.

Gunn does a gimmick action scene like this in just about every movie—a few of which are pretty fun—but this is BY FAR the worst one, at least in terms of style and staging.
